Long period
什叶派伊斯兰教与苏菲派:古典观与现代观
ISBN:9780755602278,出版年:2020,中图分类号:B9

Offering new perspectives on the relationship between Shi'is and Sufis in modern and pre-modern times, this book challenges the supposed opposition between these two esoteric traditions in Islam by exploring what could be called "Shi'i Sufism" and "Sufi-oriented Shi'ism" at various points in history. The chapters are based on new research in textual studies as well as fieldwork from a broad geographical areas including the Indian subcontinent, Anatolia and Iran. Covering a long period stretching from the early post-Mongol centuries, throughout the entire Safawid era (906–1134/1501–1722) and beyond, it is concerned not only with the sphere of the religious scholars but also with different strata of society. The first part of the volume looks at the diversity of the discourse on Sufism among the Shi'i "ulama" in the run up to and during the Safawid period. The second part focuses on the social and intellectual history of the most popular Shi'i Sufi order in Iran, the Ni'mat Allahiyya. The third part examines the relationship between Shi'ism and Sufism in the little-explored literary traditions of the Alevi-Bektashi and the Khaksariyya Sufi order. With contributions from leading scholars in Shi'ism and Sufism Studies, the book is the first to reveal the mutual influences and connections between Shi'ism and Sufism, which until now have been little explored.

拉丁美洲的民主与专政:出现,幸存与毁灭

This book presents a new theory for why political regimes emerge, and why they subsequently survive or break down. It then analyzes the emergence, survival, and fall of democracies and dictatorships in Latin America since 1900. Scott Mainwaring and Anibal Perez-Linan argue for a theoretical approach situated between long-term structural and cultural explanations and short-term explanations that look at the decisions of specific leaders. They focus on the political preferences of powerful actors the degree to which they embrace democracy as an intrinsically desirable end and their policy radicalism to explain regime outcomes. They also demonstrate that transnational forces and influences are crucial to understand regional waves of democratization. Based on extensive research into the political histories of all twenty Latin American countries, this book offers the first extended analysis of regime emergence, survival, and failure for all of Latin America over a long period of time.

During the remarkably long period (1724-1754) that Thomas Pelham-Holles, Duke of Newcastle, served as England's secretary of state, private interests and the exigencies of domestic politics rather than a rational assessment of England's stake in America determined colonial policy. As no purposeful effort was made to administer the colonies" political life, they enjoyed in effect relatively little interference in their internal affairs. The reasons for this "salutary neglect" and the lack of a vigorous colonial program arc analyzed now by James Henretta. His study, though focusing on the politics and patronage of the Duke, brings into view the entire range of men and agencies that had a hand in making colonial policy and dispensing patronage. It thus illuminates the political and administrative system that developed in England during the first half of the century and continued in effect at the time of the American Revolution.Originally published in 1972.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. From the sixteenth century, classical texts enabled Scottish and English authors and artists to imagine the character and appearance of their forebears and to consider the relevance of these ideas to their contemporaries. Richard Hingley's study crosses traditional academic boundaries by exploring sources usually separately addressed by historians, classicists, archaeologists, and geographers, to provide a new perspective on the origin of English and Scottish identity. His book is the first full exploration of these issues to cover such a long period in the development of British society and to relate ideas derived from Roman sources to the development of empire, while also placing ideas of origin in a European context. It is illustrated throughout with artefact drawings, site plans, and photographs.

James walker, according to Nagler and Redgrave, was born in 1748 the son of a captain in the merchant service; became pupil of V. Green when fifteen years old in 1784, went to Russia with the appointment of Engraver to the Empress Catherine; returned, in 1802, with a pension, and died in 1808. It is probable that the date (1763) of his becoming Green's pupil is some years too early, and the date of his death cannot be reconciled with that in Nos. 1, 9, 14, 16, except by supposing that these plates were left incomplete by him, and finished and published years after his death, or that they were re-issued but the state of the impressions does not corroborate the latter supposition. Redgrave also mentions that his plates remained in his own pos session, but were unfortunately all lost by the ship, in which they were coming to England, foundering off Yarmouth.

The Isaurians, a mountain people from Asia Minor, challenged Roman rule for over 600 years. Aside from the Jews, they were the only people in the Empire who fought with the Romans over a long period of time. At the beginning of the 5th century, they launched raids as far afield as Palestine. One Isaurian did make it onto the Eastern imperial throne, but they were never successfully integrated. They were regarded as barbarians, especially because they were compared with the Goths with their incursions into the Empire. It is Karl Feld's thesis that this comparison was encouraged by the Goth and Isaurian troop formations. His study brings together all the available documentation on the Isaurians and presents it systematically in chronological order, and critically assesses.
