内容简介

The Isaurians, a mountain people from Asia Minor, challenged Roman rule for over 600 years. Aside from the Jews, they were the only people in the Empire who fought with the Romans over a long period of time. At the beginning of the 5th century, they launched raids as far afield as Palestine. One Isaurian did make it onto the Eastern imperial throne, but they were never successfully integrated. They were regarded as barbarians, especially because they were compared with the Goths with their incursions into the Empire. It is Karl Feld's thesis that this comparison was encouraged by the Goth and Isaurian troop formations. His study brings together all the available documentation on the Isaurians and presents it systematically in chronological order, and critically assesses.
