It is well documented that a multitude of neurological disorders are caused by viruses and other transmissible agents. In recent years the interdisciplinary field of neurovirology has developed rapidly, and today, the powerful tools of molecular biology such as in situ hybridization and the polymerase chain reaction permit detailed analysis and detection of as few as one copy of a viral gene in histological sections or body fluids. This special issue compiles informative and timely reviews by specialists in clinical neurology, infectious diseases and virology, some of whom worked jointly under the auspices of the European Union's BIOMED program.
