内容简介

Virus infections in pregnancy do not only cause immediate morbidity in the mother, fetus and newborn, but can produce long-term damage or malformations in the unborn child. Vaccination can protect against vertical transmission of some viruses, but in most cases effective prevention of congenital infections and prognosis can only be achieved by rapid and accurate laboratory diagnosis. In this issue of Intervirology international experts review the current state of techniques available for the prenatal diagnosis of intrauterine rubella virus, cytomegalovirus and parvovirus infections as well as diagnostic procedures for neonatal infections with herpes simplex virus, HIV, varicellazoster virus, hepatitis B and C viruses, and human papillomavirus. While specific IgM may be helpful in most cases, virus detection by PCR or virus isolation are the methods of choice wherever possible. The timely and accurate diagnosis of viral infections requires a close collaboration between clinicians and virologists, which is particularly important for the collection of specimens from both fetus/infant and mother, and for the optimal configuration of diagnostic laboratory techniques. The recommendations for diagnosis, risk assessment, prophylaxis and treatment of viral infections provided in this issue make it a valuable source of information for virologists, gynecologists, obstetricians, pediatricians and specialists in laboratory medicine.
