That the air we breathe can affect our health is seen most dramatically in occupations where dirty work is carried out in an enclosed environment such as a factory or a mine. However, also the office or domestic environment may be polluted to a degree that the health of the workers or the occupants is threatened. In order to assess the degree of pollution, whether for advisory or regulatory reasons, measurement methods had to be standardized and equipment to be used in an occupied space without upsetting the occupants had to be developed.
