The most recent developments, strategies and innovations in plant genetic engineering for the improved nutritive quality, drought, salt and abiotic stress tolerance, production of the highly potent therapeutic agents, active recombinant proteins and enzyme variants tailored to specific needs, control of different viruses and disease resistance are discussed. Transgenic approaches, which pave the way for the creation of novel plants with improved traits, and future needs in transgenic plants safety and risk assessment are considered.
