Gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA) is a ubiquitous non protein amino acid which exerts various functions in different mammalian tissues and other organisms (e.g. bacteria, plants, fungi). Beyond its most investigated function as an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian brain, GABA has a role as a hormone or trophic factor in non-neuronal peripheral and endocrine systems. Other effects of GABA include hypotensive, tranquilizing, diuretic and antidiabetic activity. Due to its numerous roles and functions the research on GABA has several lines. Therefore in this book several topics are covered starting from the beginning, its synthesis and transport. The book provides important and novel information from the prominent scientists in the field.
