Commerce in the period prior to the American War of In dependence so interesting, that I asked him to prepare a paper on Commerce from the early days of history to about the end of the Eighteenth Century. The task was a difficult one, but Mr. Benham has handled the subject so well that I have had his sketch printed in the belief that others will enjoy reading it. It is also a pleasure for me to reproduce therewith a few prints from my col lection. The catalogue proper is not included in this volume but is printed separately inasmuch as it is interesting only to collectors.
