In relating this, the Story of the Stock Exchange, on the occasion of the centenary of the laying of the foundation-stone of its present home, it is the pleasant duty of the narrator to express his deep indebtedness to those members and officials of the Institution, besides others, who, themselves keenly interested in the subject, have rendered him much kindly aid, by placing at his disposal data, documentary and reminiscent, of the utmost value, with which to supplement the result of his own research. It must not be assumed, however, that the Story may be regarded as anything in the nature of an official record of the history of the Stock Exchange; the narration has been neither aided nor trammelled by official inspiration.
