Few would argue with the theoretical underpinnings or the practical usefulness of cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and similarly oriented psychological therapies in treating substance addictions. Yet British addiction services, with very few exceptions, have spectacularly failed in incorporating these interventions into routine care provision. This is because addiction psychiatry is without doubt the psychiatric subspecialty that is most susceptible to societal attitudes of the times, most vulnerable to political fads and funding uncertainties, and most prone to being the victim of a drive for âcheap and cheerfulâ treatment provisionoften at the expense of quality. The result has been the gradual demise of psychological treatment provision for those with substance addiction. It is within this wider socio-politico-economic climate dominating the landscape of British addiction services that this book should be read. A particular strength of the book is the easily palatable and tasty mix of theory and practice; this is the result of a joint production by six psychologists with over 60 yearsâ combined experience of working with people addicted to substances. None of the pitfalls of many multi-authored books are evident: chapters are neatly assembled, with no repetition; they fit together into a coherent whole; discussion flows sequentially and logically the book reads with no undue strain or effort. The inclusion of case vignettes, albeit limited to three, and easy-to-use appendices including work sheets, guidance notes, patient diaries and handouts, help this book live up to the promise of it being a practical treatment guide rather than a text. Reading this guide should equip the non-specialist with the basic knowledge required to use cognitive-behavioural principles in substance misuse treatment. For the already converted (but non-experts) this book should act as a refresher. But CBT enthusiasts risk disillusionment, as it offers not a lot that is new. To enhance topical relevance, authors explain how CBTstrategies can drive forward the recovery agendathe all-pervading, all-consuming current driver in addiction services. Being harsh, I ask whether, for a practical treatment guide, should there not have been more case vignettes, more therapy session transcripts as illustrative examples, some practical guidance on patient inclusion/exclusion criteria and outcome measures, and tips to handle commonly encountered challenges or âblocksâ in therapy? Although perhaps a case of âold wine in a new bottleâ, this is a user-friendly treatment guide that is likely to appeal to a wide range of âpalatesâ and ânosesâ, except to CBT connoisseurs.
Wesley Olmstead examines the parables of the Two Sons, the Tenants and the Wedding Feast against the backdrop of the wider Matthean narrative. He explores Matthew's characterization of the Jewish leaders, the people and the nations, and assesses the respective roles of Israel and the nations in the plot of Matthew's Gospel. Against the current of contemporary Matthean scholarship, Olmstead argues both that the judgement this trilogy announces falls upon Israel (and not only her leaders) and that these parables point to the future inclusion of the nations in the nation that God had promised to raise up from Abraham. Bringing both literary-critical and redaction-critical tools to bear on the texts at hand, Olmstead not only elucidates the intended meanings of this parabolic trilogy but also attempts to determine the responses they elicited from their first readers. Transcending Matthean scholarship, this book has implications for all Gospel studies.
Why are there so few women scientists? Persisting differences between women's and men's experiences in science make this question as relevant today as it ever was. This book sets out to answer this question, and to propose solutions for the future. Based on extensive research, it emphasizes that science is an intensely social activity. Despite the scientific ethos of universalism and inclusion, scientists and their institutions are not immune to the prejudices of society as a whole. By presenting women's experiences at all key career stages - from childhood to retirement - the authors reveal the hidden barriers, subtle exclusions and unwritten rules of the scientific workplace, and the effects, both professional and personal, that these have on the female scientist. This important book should be read by all scientists - both male and female - and sociologists, as well as women thinking of embarking on a scientific career.

Scholarship often moves in pendulum swings and Michael Bird believes that it is time to restore an interest in Gentiles to the plethora of lives of Jesus which emphasize his Jewishness. He does not dispute that Jesus looked forward to the restoration of Israel but argues that this carried an implication for the inclusion of the Gentiles.
The Fifth Gospel: The Gospel of Thomas Comes of Age, by Stephen J. Patterson and James M. Robinson, with a New English Translation by Hans-Gebhard Bethge et al. Berliner Arbeitskreis fur koptische-gnostische Schriften. Harrisburg, PA; Trinity Press International, 1998. Pp.119. N.P. I hardly thought there was need for a new translation of the Gospel of Thomas until I read this one. The Gospel of Thomas was one of the first treatises of the Nag Hammadi Library to be published in translation, and several good translations already exist (by Robert McL. Wilson, Marvin Meyer, and the standard critical translation by Thomas O. Lambdin, among others). But this translation by the Berlin Working Group for Coptic Gnostic Writings (Berliner Arbeitskreis fur koptische-gnostische Schriften) under the leadership first of Hans-Martin Schenke and now of Hans-Gebhard Bethge, advances the grace and ease of translation more than any previous one. This English translation was prepared by the Berlin Working Group for inclusion in Kurt Aland's Synopsis Quattuor Evangeliorum (15th ed.) and is here presented in a further revised form. The translation tends toward demystifying the sayings and rendering them in a more accessible "wisdom" language. Take, for example, the Introduction and the first saying, which are combined in the translation: "These are the hidden words that the living Jesus spoke. And Didymos Judas Thomas wrote them down. And he said: `Whoever finds the meaning of these words will not taste death."' Compared to Lambdin's translation (Nag Hammadi Library in English, ed. James M. Robinson), the "secret sayings" have become simply "hidden words," while the "interpretation of these sayings" has become more straightforwardly to "find the meaning of these words." Effectively this translation strategy aligns these sayings of Jesus with the larger corpus of gnomic literature as opposed to the more mystifying language that aligns them with the opaque language of Gnosticism. This translation strategy is evident in other sayings as wellsayings 2 ("be dismayed" as opposed to "being troubled") and 8 ("sensible fisherman" as opposed to "wise") among many others. This translation also distinguishes itself by clarifying some of the more obscure and difficult readings of the Gospel of Thomas. Although scholars may disagree with certain readings, the general public will find them accessible. Two examples will illustrate this. First, Gos. Thorn. 27 renders the literal "If you do not fast against the world" of the Coptic as "If you do not abstain from the world, you will not find the kingdom." The Berlin Group's translation goes directly to the meaning of the language rather than reproducing the Coptic literally into English. The second example is Gos. Thorn. 49, where the Coptic has been read more simply. The Berlin Group renders the saying as "Blessed are the solitary ones, the elect. For you will find the kingdom." Lambdin's translation"Blessed are the solitary and elect"-implies that there are two groups, not one, that are blessed. â¦

Are human rights really a building block of global constitutionalism? Does global constitutionalism have any future in the theory and practice of international law and global governance? This book critically examines these key questions by focusing on the mechanisms utilised by global constitutionalism whilst comparing the historical functioning of constitutional rights in national systems. Yahyaoui Krivenko provides new insights into the workings of human rights and associated notions, such as the state, the political, and the individual, by demonstrating that human rights are antithetical to global constitutionalism and encouraging new discussions on the meaning of global constitutionalism and human rights. Recruited straight from university, Ernest Satow (1843â1929) became one of the most respected British diplomats, particularly in Japan, where he is still remembered. After a career spent mostly in the rapidly developing Far East, he retired in 1906. Just before the outbreak of war, he was asked to compile a work on international diplomacy, and 'Satow', as it has become known, was first published in 1917, and in updated versions has not been out of print since. Satow's work was pioneering, there being at that time no comprehensive study in English of diplomacy. Volume 1 covers the history of international diplomacy, its practice and legal matters, and is notable for the author's clear language, and the inclusion of often whimsical anecdotes to illustrate a point in discussion. Writing at a time of enormous international upheaval, Satow provides an illuminating insight into diplomacy before the age of instant communications.
