In theory, chemical-free sustainable agriculture not only has ecological benefits, but also social and economic benefits for rural communities. By removing farmers' expenses on chemical inputs, it provides them with greater autonomy and challenges the status quo, where corporations dominate food systems. In practice, however, organisations promoting sustainable agriculture often maintain connections with powerful institutions and individuals, who have vested interests in maintaining the status quo. This book explores this tension within the sustainable farming movement through reference to three detailed case studies of organisations operating in rural India.

Family, State and Social Policy brings together two important themes: the changing nature of the family; and the relationship between family and state, as it is expressed in social policy. The book explores and clarifies the significance both of family change for policy, and of policy for families, outlining models that can be used in order to understand the state's approach and response to families.
Family Matters: Perspectives on the Family and Social Policy covers the proceedings of the Symposium on Priority for the Family. The book examines how a family might be strengthened and how any stresses society imposes on the family might be lightened. The text consists of 20 chapters and discusses several issues concerning the family as a social unit, such as environmental factors, socio-economic stress, housing conditions, poverty, unemployment, and the lack of options. The book will be of great interest to readers concerned with the implications of social norms and standards for the family as a social unit.
First published in 1987. This study is concerned with the problem of political obligation, the normative question of why one should obey the law, and with social contract thought as an answer to this question. It is entitled a critique, but the critique is not of social contract theory as such, but rather of the "orthodox" treatment of contract that yields so readily to the rough handling and easy rejection that is the normal lot of contractarianism in contemporary treatments. In its place will be suggested a reinterpretation of contract that sees it as making different assumptions and requiring different premises, and that is proof against many of the orthodox refutations of social contract theory; the reinterpretation is thus in the nature of a vindication. First, from an examination of the most commonly cited champions of contractarianism (namely Hobbes, Locke and Rousseau) will be derive a reinterpretation of contract in the form of a new model or syllogism, the features of which will be brought out by contrasting it first with the contemporary ideas of John Rawls and then with the orthodox model itself. Democratic consent theory, as the heir to the remnants of the orthodox model, will be examined, and the ideas of T. H. Green will be considered as embodying an important feature of contractarianism omitted or ignored by the orthodox model (and hence by democratic theory.) Finally, the new model of contract will be suggested as a potentially useful approach to the problem of political obligation in the modern context. This title will be of interest to student of politics and philosophy.
Africa: Economic, Political and Social Issues opens with a study wherein four research questions are addressed using the structural functionalist approach to the study of family, drawing from the views of Durkheim, Radcliffe-brown and Fortes. A comparative analysis of social protection for older persons in Eswatini and Lesotho, countries located in Southern Africa, is provided. The authors discuss the relevance of socio-economic rights in Kwazulu- Natal, particularly how the state should fulfil its constitutional mandate to provide the citizens of the province with access to healthcare services. The ambiguous relationship between Swaziland as British-protected territory and Britain in the period from 1903 to 1968 ius also explored, hightlighting how the Swazi traditional authority endeavoured to protect its power and the sovereignty of the nation through British protection in 1884. Approximately 15% of the world production of titanium dioxide is mined in South Africa, and over 60% of this is recovered from heavy, mineral-rich Cenozoic Age dune sand deposits on the eastern coastline. As such, the authors conduct a microprobe analysis of 455 rutile grains from these sediments. The role and influence of the wildlife economy in KwaZulu-Natal is explored through a decade-long study of the wildlife sector in South Africa. The concluding study uses bivariate scatterplots and correlations analysis to elucidate the hydrogeochemical controls of salinity in typical circumneutral coalmine groundwater.
This stimulating new text reflects on the extraordinary political stability in Britain, compared with much of continental Europe, over the last hundred years. It also provides a historical perspective on current political issues, especially on the attempts of the present administration to reduce the state's involvement in welfare and in the funding of other public services. In examining these areas, the author argues that they have been shaped by the conflict between individualistic and collectivist ideas and until recently have been dominated by the latter.
Social History and Social Policy is a collection of papers that explores the correlation of social history and social policy. Each article in the book are prepared by social historians, preoccupied in the study of the origins and structure of health systems, urban planning, schools, and pension programs, who seek to change the process of social policy formation. The book is divided into three sections. Part I serves as an introduction and provides the history of social institutions. The second part deals with the history of social problems, discussing public employee pension problems; policies on health care; and a few aspects of the history of criminal justice in the United States. The last part provides the uses of history in the making of social policy. The text will be a valuable source of insight for public administrators, politicians, policy makers, political leaders, and analysts.
