The time which has elapsed since the publication of the first edition of this treatise has been a period of great activity in the development of the Theory of Functions of a real variable. In particular, the introduction of the Lebesgue Integral, which was new in 1907, has since produced its full effect, in the generalization of the Theory of Integration, and upon the theory of the representation of functions by means of Fourier's, and other, series and integrals.In order to give an adequate account of the subject in its present condition, a large amount of new matter has had to be introduced; and this has made it necessary to divide the treatise into two volumes. The matter contained in the first edition has been carefully revised, amplified, and in many cases rewritten.The parts of the subject which were dealt with in the first five chapters of the first edition have been expanded into the eight chapters of the present first volume of the new edition. With a view to greater unity of treatment of the Theory of Integration, some theorems which appeared in Chapter VI, of the first edition, have however been included in the present volume. A considerable part of the Theory of Integration, in relation to series and sequences, still however remains for treatment in Volume II.On controversial matters connected with the fundamentals of the Theory of Aggregates, the considerable diversity of opinion which has arisen amongst Mathematicians has been taken into account, but in general no attempt has been made to give dogmatic decisions between opposed opinions. In view of the delicate questions which arise as to the legitimacy and meaning of the axiom known as the Multiplicative Axiom, or as the Principle of Zermelo, the policy has been adopted of so framing the proofs of theorems as to avoid an appeal to the axiom, whenever that course appeared to be possible; in other cases, the necessity for the employment of the axiom has been pointed out.Ample references to sources of information are given throughout, but such references do not provide the means for compiling a complete list of writings on the subject. No attempt has been made to settle questions of priority of discovery.My thanks are due to Dr H. F. For more than 200 years, the Fourier Transform has been one of the most important mathematical tools for understanding the dynamics of linear wave trains. "Nonlinear Ocean Waves and the Inverse Scattering Transform" presents the development of the nonlinear Fourier analysis of measured space and time series, which can be found in a wide variety of physical settings including surface water waves, internal waves, and equatorial Rossby waves. This revolutionary development will allow hyperfast numerical modelling of nonlinear waves, greatly advancing our understanding of oceanic surface and internal waves. Nonlinear Fourier analysis is based upon a generalization of linear Fourier analysis referred to as the inverse scattering transform, the fundamental building block of which is a generalized Fourier series called the Riemann theta function. Elucidating the art and science of implementing these functions in the context of physical and time series analysis is the goal of this book. It presents techniques and methods of the inverse scattering transform for data analysis. Geared toward both the introductory and advanced reader venturing further into mathematical and numerical analysis, this book is suitable for classroom teaching as well as research.

During my father's lifetime, I published a historical sketch of the Hyderabad State, under the title of Our Faiflzful Ally the Nizam.1 In the Preface to that book I mentioned that I was not then at liberty to use docu ments in my possession throwing much light on our poli tical relations with Hyderabad. And particularly on that very important measure, the assignment of the Berar Provinces, but that at some future time that restriction would probably be removed. I was not then so fully informed as I am now, from the private correspondence between them, how widely the views of Lord Dalhousie and General Fraser diverged} nor did I then understand how much my lamented father's name had come to be identified, very inaccurately and unfairly, as a result or the oficially published misrepresentation which I shall have to correct, with the assignment or sequestration of the Nizam's Berar Provinces. The restriction as to the publication of my father's papers has now been finally removed by his demise, and I am unwilling any longer to incur the responsibility of withholding from English statesmen and the public generally the exclusive and otherwise unattainable and private information contained in this book, and which, I may add, I have refused, very much against my own interests, to plate at the discretion and disposal of parties in England for publication.

In this book the authors give the first necessary and sufficient conditions for the uniform convergence a.s. of random Fourier series on locally compact Abelian groups and on compact non-Abelian groups. They also obtain many related results. For example, whenever a random Fourier series converges uniformly a.s. it also satisfies the central limit theorem. The methods developed are used to study some questions in harmonic analysis that are not intrinsically random. For example, a new characterization of Sidon sets is derived.The major results depend heavily on the Dudley-Fernique necessary and sufficient condition for the continuity of stationary Gaussian processes and on recent work on sums of independent Banach space valued random variables. It is noteworthy that the proofs for the Abelian case immediately extend to the non-Abelian case once the proper definition of random Fourier series is made. In doing this the authors obtain new results on sums of independent random matrices with elements in a Banach space. The final chapter of the book suggests several directions for further research.
