In this edition of my book some obvious errors have been corrected, and certain doubtful points have been cleared up with the help of experience gained by other workers in the same field. But, as a rule, my object has been not so much to draw attention to the actual road as to describe the antiquities and objects of interest which arrest the traveller's notice on his journey. From whatever side we approach it, the subject is a fascinating one. All of these different studies, varied in aims and scope as they may be, bear witness to the perennial in terest which the Pilgrims' Way inspires. The beauty of the country through which the old road runs, its historic associations and famous memories, the ancient churches and houses which lie on its course, will always attract those who love and reverence the past, and will lead many to follow in the footsteps of the mediaeval pilgrims along the Way to Canterbury.
This remarkable Statement enables us to place the origin of the Castle as far back as the year 989 before Christ, but like much else that has been written Of the remote history of Scotland, it savours more of fable than of fact.
Twenty-Five years hence a very considerable proportion of the inscriptions and epitaphs recorded in the following pages will have entirely disappeared. This is due, not altogether - in some cases, indeed, not at all - to neglect or wilful spoliation. The laws of disintegration operate with merciless severity upon the sacred relics and the quaint and curious words engraved on their surface. Except where the stone is very durable, epitaphs, after the lapse of a couple of centuries, become defaced and unintelligible.The memory of our forefathers, however remote the period in which they lived, however simple their lives and humble their origin, is worthy of being perpetuated. Apart altogether from the question of genealogy and pedigree, there is an element of deep pathos in all that concerns our departed kindred, and the simple words which record their virtues (not always omitting their vices). Time's stern corroding touch deals hardly with our most cherished and sacred memorials, whether in the shape of tombstones or church buildings.

This book is designed to give, in simple and readable form, all that is of general interest about the Parish, and at the same time it is meant to supply, with reasonable fulness, what can only be expected to attract those who have some special tie to the district.
To collect the inscriptions from nearly two thousand bells, distributed amongst seven hundred churches, was a task which, with my limited leisure, I could not have accomplished unless I had received great assistance.At a very early stage of my labours, John Eobert Daniel-Tyssen, Esq., and Amhurst Daniel-Tyssen, Esq., the Rev. J. J. Eaven, D.D., and the Rev. John Henry Sperling placed their collections, not only for Norfolk but for other counties, at my disposal. The Rev. J. A. Ogle of Sedgeford copied for me the inscriptions on the church bells of his rural deanery, and the Rev. Morton Dulley of Barnby, a number of those in his neighbourhood. To these and to other gentlemen who communicated the inscriptions on the bells of their own parish churches my hearty thanks are due, as likewise in a very special manner to Mr. T. E. Tallack, who devoted the summer of 1869 to obtaining the inscriptions from the bells of a large number of churches which, on account of the difficulty of access, had been passed over by previous collectors.

When the newly-appointed Regent came to look into the financial state of the country, he found France upon the brink of ruin. Royal extravagance, the endless suc cession of wars, and the peculations of statesmen and extortions of moneylenders, had increased the national debts to an enormous figure; the national revenue was steadily declining, while agriculture, commerce and industry, weighed down by taxation and drained of their life-blood by a host of usurers, had almost given up the struggle.
