Various abbreviations have been used in the credits to the quotations, as No. For number, st. For stanza, p. For page, for line, 1! For paragraph, fol. For folio. The method used in indicating the subdivisions of books will be understood by reference to the following plan.
ON the completion of the present work, it is to me a pleasant duty to express my thanks to all those who have rendered its execution possible, and have helped to give it its new shape. I might have mentioned, under the separate words, those scholars who have discovered any etymological data bearing upon the vocabulary of our mother tongue; the vast extent of etymological literature deterred me, however, from doing so. There is no Teutonic scholar or linguist of any repute who has not by his researches either helped to determine the etymology of some German word or actually settled it. It would have been an extremely toilsome and yet useless task to give the name of the discoverer of the etymology of each word and how frequently have several scholars at the same time deserved credit for clearing up the history of a word. 0. Schade, in his Old German Dictionary, has with untiring industry collected materials from the copious literature for the older period, and has received the thanks of specialists. I could not expect that those who may use my book would wade through the numerous errors and occasional imperfections of scientific investigation in order to form their own opinion on the evolution of particular words. By foregoing such a plan I obtained space, in spite of the limited compass to which this book was confined, to describe pretty fully the actual development of the word itself.
I am sure that my reader will excuse, while the author will pardon, my making a few extracts from this singular and entertaining melange of Surnames. It is right to bear in mind that the author has sometimes regarded their apparent, rather than their actual, derivations and original meanings. Mr. Bowditch acknowledges the assistance he received from the article in the Edinburgh Review above mentioned, and from Mr. Dixon's publication, as well as from what he is pleased to call my elaborate essay. He adds Had I seen these publications at an earlier period, the great extent of the subject would have deterred me altogether. I am sure that many, in common with myself, will feel glad that Mr. Bowditch's reading in this direction was originally thus limited.
The etymological dictionary or the scottish language, which was published in the year 1808, has been so favourably received, that although the impres sion was large, a set is now rarely to be found; and at any rate cannot be purchased at less than double the price paid by Subscribers. As many, who would wish to possess the original work, cannot now be supplied while it has still been out of the reach of others, not less interested in our national literature; the Author has been advised to give it to the Public in an abridged form.
The Hebrew and Greek Alphabets are subjoined, to enable the pupil and the unlearned to read the words in these characters, and thus to prepare them for commencing with greater advantage the study of these languages.

I do not, in general, give the history Of the use of the word under discussion, unless there is some special point which is necessary to be known for the sake of the etymology. For such history, accompanied by illustrative comments. References, and discussions, I must refer students to the unabridged work.
The Verbs arranged according to their stems (lists XVIII. And verbs arranged according to the char acter of their radicals (lists XXV.-XLI.) may be used in connection with grammatical study. This use may also be made of the Nouns arranged according to their Formation.
It was proposed to include other material than that here given but the demand for the book has been so pressing, and the delay of publication has already been so great, that it is thought best to leave this additional material for a later edi tion. The principal lexicons, concordances and similar books have been used in making out these lists. In former editions my brother, Mr. Robert F. Harper, and in this edition my friend, Mr. A. S. Carrier, have rendered valuable aid in the work of collecting and arranging words. Great care has been taken to make the lists accurate but it is reasonable to suppose that omissions and errors will be found. Corrections will be thankfully received.
