Für den Geschmack des grossen Publikums， fürchte ich， wird dies Buch nicht im rechten Augenblick erscheinen. Hätte es z. B. von Max Klinger gehandelt， so hätte es dem Interesse unserer Zeit näher gestanden， - und nicht mit Unrecht， denn Max Klinger ist nicht nur ein moderner Mann， sondern auch ein merkwürdiger Künstler - als jetzt， wo es von Thorwaldsen handelt， der freilich ein ausgezeichneter Künstler war， momentan aber gerade das Gegentheil eines modernen Mannes ist.Seine Kunst befindet sich heut zu Tage in einem Stadium， das man als dunklen Punkt bezeichnen könnte. Sie ist wie die Sonne im Westen untergegangen， in Folge des zeitlichen Wechsels， und sie ist noch nicht wieder ganz im Osten aufgegangen， um in historischer Ewigkeit zu strahlen.Es sollte die Frucht von unseres Zeitalters Studium der Geschichte der Kultur und der Kunst sein， dass man doch endlich einmal einsehen lernte， dass sich Geschmack und Mode radförmig drehen， so dass folglich die Dinge abwechselnd hoch und niedrig stehen， - ohne Rücksicht auf den ihnen innewohnenden， wirklichen Werth. Es sind ja nun doch mehr als 2000 Jahre verflossen， seit das allgemeine Gesetz， von dem hier die Rede ist， von dem Vater der Geschichtsschreibung aufgestellt wurde. Merke dir vor allen Dingen， - lässt Herodot den erfahrenen Mann zu dem grossen König sagen - dass in Bezug auf die menschlichen Dinge ein Kreislauf stattfindet， der nicht erlaubt， dass dasselbe beständig oben ist. Es ist hier wohl in erster Linie an die Herrscher der Staaten und Völker gedacht， an Reichthum， Macht und äusseres Glück; aber selbst wenn jemand die Theorie in diesem Sinne bezweifeln wollte， so wird doch wohl niemand in Abrede nehmen， dass sie ihre volle Gültigkeit hat， wo es sich um die Geschmacksrichtung handelt. Man braucht nicht lange gelebt oder sehr umfassende Studien gemacht zu haben， um hier den Kreislauf zu bemerken.
The facts in the case are these:J. B. Patterson came from Winchester, Va., to Oquawka in September, 1835. A year later, his wife, accompanied by their eight-year-old son, joined him. Mr. Patterson founded the Oquawka Spectator, a weekly publication still in existence. He was a man of fine literary taste and good literary ability; his life of Black Hawk is properly regarded as a standard history of early border times. The son, Edward Howard Norton, was reared most prudently; fond of reading, he was provided with the best books and with the choicest magazine literature. Under the discreet guidance of his parents, he was developed from youth into a manhood of unusual promise.Young Patterson came of age on January 27, 1849. At that time his father handed over to him the management of the Spectator and of the job-printing office connected therewith. Full of ambition and of confidence, the young man had long cherished the determination to make for himself a place and a reputation in the literary world. Of the many figures conspicuous at that time in American literature he most admired Edgar A. Poe. In the Southern Literary Messenger, in Graham's, in the Pioneer, and in the Broadway Journal, he had read and was fascinated by the work of this remarkable genius.

As a usual thing Bernard Shaw's plays give more of the author's whimsical, satirical View of life than of life itself, but in Candida, the author of Arms and the Man and The Devil's Disciple comes more closely to real human nature than he has ever come before, and the result is a delightful and amusing little play.
