A French traveller once described the valley of Aosta enthusiastically as the most interesting spot in Europe. Even if we deem the superlative praise of the French traveller an exaggeration, it is no overstatement to characterise the valley as one of the most interesting places in Europe. A combination such as the valley presents, of the highest peaks of the Alps, of the best Roman ruins outside of Rome and Pompei, and of scores of remarkable mediæval castles, is nowhere else to be found, and is, in itself, sufficient reward for a trip to the region that holds it.Such a trip must be made on purpose, for the valley is not on a main international line of transit; it is, however, a journey easy to make, since the valley is not far from important cities, like Milan and Turin.
The following pages are more in the nature of a preliminary report than an exhaustive account of the antiquities of the valleys of the upper Verde River and Walnut Creek. This report deals with areas little known archeologically, although, by reason of their geographic positions, presenting to the student of the prehistoric culture of Arizona most interesting problems. The aim is to consider types rather than to enumerate many examples of the same kind of ruins. The present discussion is confined for the greater part, though not entirely, to architectural features.
Terms, though these are sometimes necessary, and I have not attempted minute research in Alpine literature, now become very large, but I have endeavoured to write from the point of View Of one who is a lover of the Alps, is somewhat of a geologist, and a little of a naturalist. I cannot hope to have avoided mistakes for, if we are fallible mortals even in the days of our.
In writing this Preface I complete, not without regret, a pleasant task which has occupied much of my spare time during the last three years. For many years a copy of Moore's Journal of 1864 has been the most valued book in my own Alpine Library. The Alps in 1864 was, however, never published I believe that only about one hundred copies were printed; these were presented by Moore to his personal friends, so that the work has remained hitherto practically inaccessible to general readers. It seemed to me a pity that the ever-growing circle of those who take an interest in Mountaineering whether active or only academic should not have an opportunity of reading a book which is truly, as the Editor of the Alpine Journal said at the time of Moore's death, one of the most vivid and fascinating books of Alpine travel which have ever been written. In reply to my request, Mr. Moore's family were good enough not only to give me permission to reprint the Journal of 1864, but also to place at my disposal several manuscript volumes of later Journals which had been preserved, and of which I have been able to make much use.I have left the text of the Journal exactly as originally printed, excepting only where later usage or knowledge has altered the names of mountains or places, or their spelling, in which case the balance of convenience seemed to indicate the adoption of the more modem nomenclature.

Few thinkers have had as much impact on contemporary philosophy as has Alvin Plantinga. The work of this quintessential analytic philosopher has in many respects set the tone for the debate in the fields of modal metaphysics and epistemology and he is arguably the most important philosopher of religion of our time. In this volume, a distinguished team of today's leading philosophers address the central aspects of Plantinga's philosophy - his views on natural theology; his responses to the problem of evil; his contributions to the field of modal metaphysics; the controversial evolutionary argument against naturalism; his model of epistemic warrant and his view of epistemic defeat; and his recent work on mind-body dualism. The journeys, of which an account is given in these volumes, were made in the summers of 1853, 1861, and 1865. The first of these in order of time has been placed last in order of narration, as it is best suited to supplement the information given in the other two.

The work has appealed most strongly to seekers after light in theosophic thought, and it has supplied a philosophy particularly needed by those who have left beaten and unsatisfactory paths, but who have lacked the confidence to cross the threshold of the more advanced, and therefore more technical, teachers.
These shifting, homeless wanderers, like flocks of sheep, invade one district after another, leaving no home, improvement, town. Government or hardly an account as they pass on. Whatever they find of value they take with them. Many of these districts are yet rich in placer. And little or no attempt has ever been made to locate or work the quartz.
