I Pantaloon, with his tail-feather Spangled like the weather, Panached, too, with many a plume, Watched the monkey Fanfreluche, Shivering in his gilded ruche, Fawn upon the piano keys Flatter till they answer back, Through the scale of centuries, Difference between white and black. Winds like hurricanes of light Change the blackest vacuums To a light-barred avenue Semitones of might and right Then, from matter, life comes. Down that lengthy avenue Leading us we know not where, Sudden views creep through the air Oh the keys we Stumble through l Jungles splashed with violent light, Promenades all hard and bright.

Some travellers see and enjoy more than others. Those best informed enjoy most. The greater the knowledge of a locality the greater the pleasure of travel. What to one is a barren, useless tract, with nothing of interest, is to another a thrilling reminder of early Warfare, heroic struggles, and daring deeds. What to one is a pile of moss-grown ruins is to another aland-mark of early history. A house, old fashioned and shattered, is to one uninteresting and unsightly, while to another who knows its history it has the charm of romance. The weather-beaten grave-stone which one passes unheeded another looks upon with reverence. Nearly every spot along the shores of Saco Bay is hallowed by thrilling associations and interesting reminiscences. To pre sent some of these in a concise form for the enter tainment of the numerous patrons of Old Orchard, and Biddeford Pool, as well as to interest the gen eral reader, and preserve from oblivion some bistori cal incidents never before published, has occasioned.

David was at his happiest in depicting the quiet and conventional. He lacked passion and sense of the dramatic. Consequently the portrayal of these figures, with their solemn, rigid atti tudes, lay exaétly within the sphere of his talent and afforded him the opportunity to elaborate the detail of the work, and linger with rare art over the workmanship of the brocades and hangings, the stone carvings of the throne and the landscape background. If the whole impression created is somewhat cool and remote, this must be attributed to the unusual dimensions of a work planned to be viewed from a distance, and which, consequently, presented unsuspec'ted difliculties to a Flemish artist of that period. One must remember that Flemish painting developed from the art of miniature, and that from its early beginnings to Gerard David's time, hardly more than a dozen altarpieces of the compass of the St. Anne triptych have been preserved.

Last summer also, during my speaking tour on the Redpath Chautauqua Circuit, after each lec ture I was asked by many people if I had pub lished anything relative to my work in book form. And so, there you are, dear reader, and I trust, good friend. But I beg you not to think of this little book as the story of my life. It is much more than that; it is the story of that which to me is more than my life. It is the story of the lighting of a torch — a torch indeed, but one blazing like the sun, one which shall furnish a new and compelling inspiration to the children of many generations, each striving to perform his or her part in making brighter the home, the race, the community, the nation, and the world.

But it is not with the living tree that our present subject has to do — all of that belongs to the province of Forestry — but rather with the product after the tree has been cut down and sawed into lumber or other forms of wood. Lumbering and Forestry are not an titheses, but both Should accomplish the same result, the perpetuation of the forest for future use, whatever that may be. Lumber is a crop, as are vegetables, and the forest may be utilized, and at the same time conserved for future use.

This volume is the first of four which are to deal with all the native forest trees of North America north of the Mexican boundary. It contains an account of the tree species known to inhabit the Pacific region, 150 in all. Part II will be devoted to the Rocky Mountain trees, Part III to the trees of the southern States, and Part IV to the trees of the northern States. The region covered by Part I includes Alaska, British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, and California (see maps, frontispiece). Many trees described occur wholly within this region, but none are represented throughout it. A few are found on its southern border and range into Mexico, while three or four trees stretch from within the Pacific region to the Atlantic. The definition of a tree followed by the author includes woody plants having one well-defined stem and a more or less definitely formed crown (but not excluding unbranched cactuses, yuccas, and palms), and attaining somewhere in their natural or planted range a height of at least 8 feet and a diameter of not less than 2 inches. It has been difficult to apply this definition in all cases, for there is no sharp line between some shrub-like trees and some tree-like shrubs. However, though wholly arbitrary, it has been serviceable. A considerable number of species included are, over much of their range, little more than chaparral shrubs, becoming tree-like only in exceptionally favorable places. Recent discoveries in this region have made it necessary to class as trees several species previously regarded as shrubs. Some species are shrubs within this territory, but are trees outside of it. There still remain for further careful consideration several species of Arctostaphylos, Ceanothus, and Styrax, which may prove to be trees.Since this work was prepared solely for the layman, the use of technical terms has been avoided.

The peculiar charm and fascination that trees exert over many people I had always felt from childhood, but it was that great nature-lover, John Muir, who first showed me how and where to learn their language.
