In this book, Michael Arbib, a researcher in artificial intelligence and brain theory, joins forces with Mary Hesse, a philosopher of science, to present an integrated account of how humans 'construct' reality through interaction with the social and physical world around them. The book is a major expansion of the Gifford Lectures delivered by the authors at the University of Edinburgh in the autumn of 1983. The authors reconcile a theory of the individual's construction of reality as a network of schemas 'in the head' with an account of the social construction of language, science, ideology and religion to provide an integrated schema-theoretic view of human knowledge. The authors still find scope for lively debate, particularly in their discussion of free will and of the reality of God. The book integrates an accessible exposition of background information with a cumulative marshalling of evidence to address fundamental questions concerning human action in the world and the nature of ultimate reality.
There is a great deal of innovation in the use of wood in construction, from impressive modern buildings to new construction products that reduce build times and improve building performance. Frederick Thomas Hodgson's book, Light and Heavy Timber Framing Made Easy/ is a nearly 400-page reference manual, intended to be an experienced woodworker's companion when timber framing and a valuable guidebook for those new to the craft.The book begins with an introduction to the joints used in woodwork framing and a classification of the various timbers available. A lengthy section on the classification of joints follows. These three sections combine to form what is essentially the introductory portion of the text. Hodgson then transitions into detailed discussions of specifics aspects of timber framing: studding, partitions, doors, balloon framing, roofing and more. The latter half of the book is dedicated entirely to a thorough breakdown of heavy timber framing and the challenges and solutions specifically associated with this aspect of the craft.With over 450 illustrations included, the images in Light and Heavy Timber Framing Made Easy/ are at times just as valuable as the text. These images have been clearly reproduced in this republication, providing the reader with added insight. Hodgson's text is a detailed breakdown of light and heavy timber framing. This book would make a valuable addition to the library of any woodworker, particularly those interested in heritage methods. Individuals new to woodworking and framing would certainly benefit from reading this text. The construction of the aqueduct that brings the waters of Owens River across 250 miles of desolate and rugged country to the City of Los Angeles set a new standard of public ser vice for American municipalities. No other public work at all comparable in magnitude to the aqueduct has been accomplished within the limits of cost and time fixed by the engin eers in their first estimates. It is not an ex aggeration to say that the builders of the aque duct established a world's record of efficiency and economy. They promised that the work should be done in five years, and water dcliv ered at the San Fernando reservoir at a cost of They began work in 1908, and they brought the water to San Fernando in 1913 at a cost within the original estimate.

Thin-walled structures are designed with advanced numerical analysis techniques and constructed using sophisticated fabrication processes. There are, however, a number of factors that may result in a structure that is not exactly coincident with what was considered during the design calculations. These features may be associated with changes in the properties of the structure, in the geometry, and many others. But even small changes in the structure may sometimes produce significant changes in the response.The present work is intended to introduce professionals and researchers to the effects of imperfections on the stresses in thin-walled structures. The main idea behind the presentation is that small imperfections may introduce changes in the stresses that are nearly equal to the stresses due to the loads.The book is organized into two main parts.
