Turning from this grand and queenly figure we find the same all-pervading supernatural element in the lovely and loveable Margaret Roper, the perfect daughter of the saintly Sir Thomas More, her filial devotion to whom, in circumstances the most trying, forms the brightest gem in her immortal crown of glory. On the other hand, we have here Fannie Allen, the great, en lightened daughter of the infidel Ethan Allen, the sweet odor of whose truly Christian virtues won all hearts to Christ and brought many of her relatives and friends to embrace the true faith. In her, we behold the first scion of the New England stock, the first daughter of the Puritans, who took the monastic habit and consecrated herself to God in holy religion for the service of His suffering members — the Hospital Sister of St. Joseph whose memory is in benediction amongst her Sisters in religion. Another striking example we have here in Margaret O'carroll.
My father, David Musgrave, was the younger son'of a neighboring squire, and having but a younger son's por tion, he had been placed by his father in a London bank ing house, of which he became the head before he was thirty-five years old. Retiring at fifty with a large for tune, he had purchased the Grange and married the rec tor's daughter, expecting to spend many years amongst the scenes of his youth, enjoying the wealth which the best part of his life had been spent in accumulating.
For nearly half of a long life it has been my vocation to collect and arrange legends and records of women worshipped as saints or so considered. Although the work has been to me a sanctuary from the anxieties and vexations of daily life, I have, during the whole time, been painfully conscious of my unworthiness to write on the subject of saints, and my inability to approach the degree of excellence to which such a book might attain in better hands. From the mass of information - often contradictory - concerning this vast multitude, I have selected the most remarkable incidents. Some of these are chosen on account of the historical importance of the heroine, her noble character or wonderful gifts, or because of some interesting side-light which they shed on customs or beliefs of her time and country. Some few stories have been included as examples of the extreme absurdity to which these memorials have reached. Where there are several saints of one name they are arranged chronologically.My information has been gathered largely from the Acta Sanctorum of the Bollandists, from the histories of the various countries and religious orders to which these saintly women belonged, from collections of Lives and legends, and from many other sources. Authorities are given for each article. A list of the books consulted will be found at the end of the second volume. I have generally abstained from criticising or expressing a personal opinion. Where I have said that a story is untrue or an author untrustworthy, the statement is made on the authority of some accredited Catholic writer.There are moments when it seems as though the presenting of a subject so remote from modern tendencies almost asks for an apology.
The basis of the present Monitor will be found to be Webb's Freemason's Monitor, edition of 1816, arranged in the form of work ing-text, according to the best standards, and in the precise order required in the Ritual.
In offering to the public the second volume of the Anthology compiled by al-Mufaddal, containing the translation and English commentary, I should explain that the printing of the first volume was interrupted in 1914 by the outbreak of the European War, and that the work of translation had to be completed before the Arabic text was fully in type. This, however, applies only to the portion from p. 335 of this volume onwards to the end, and I believe that no important discrepancies, if any, will be found between the translation and the text.The whole of the second volume has been read in proof by my friend Prof. A. A. Bevan, to whose valuable criticism and suggestions I owe much. The Subject Index, compiled after the matter of the volume was in type, has been enriched by many observations dealing with the plants and trees mentioned in the poems, supplied by Prof. J. J. Hess of Zurich, whose high authority on this subject is generally recognized by European scholars, and to whom my grateful thanks are due. It will be seen that the entries in the Index do not always agree with the conclusions provisionally adopted in the text, and it will be understood that the identifications in the former supersede those in the latter.In the Introduction the history of the Collection, and its character as a trustworthy compilation of genuine specimens of ancient Arabian poetic art, are explained; and it remains only to commend its study to those interested in the development of civilization, and especially in the far-reaching influence which the victories of Islam, with Arab thought and culture behind them, exercised in the three Continents from the seventh century onwards. No race has ever expressed itself more completely, or with greater faithfulness, in its national literature, an appreciation of which is therefore indispensable to any adequate view of the part played by the Arabs in the history of Mankind.

We have finished our task, and we hope the contribution we have made may enable some other hand in the future to write a more complete history of the most momentous reform thathas yet been launched on the world — the first organized protest against the injustice which has brooded over the character and destiny of one half the human race.
In this rich and detailed study of early modern women's thought, Jacqueline Broad explores the complexity of women's responses to Cartesian philosophy and its intellectual legacy in England and Europe. She examines the work of thinkers such as Mary Astell, Elisabeth of Bohemia, Margaret Cavendish, Anne Conway and Damaris Masham, who were active participants in the intellectual life of their time and were also the respected colleagues of philosophers such as Descartes, Leibniz and Locke. She also illuminates the continuities between early modern women's thought and the anti-dualism of more recent feminist thinkers. The result is a more gender-balanced account of early modern thought than has hitherto been available. Broad's clear and accessible exploration of this still-unfamiliar area will have a strong appeal to both students and scholars in the history of philosophy, women's studies and the history of ideas.
Statius' Achilleid is a playful, witty, and open-ended epic in the manner of Ovid. As we follow Achilles' metamorphosis from wild boy to demure girl to lover to hero, the poet brilliantly illustrates a series of contrasting codes of behaviour: male and female, epic and elegiac. This first full-length study of the poem addresses not only the narrative itself, but also sets the myth of Achilles on Scyros within a broad interpretive framework. The exploration ranges from the reception of the Achilleid in Baroque opera to the anthropological parallels that have been adduced to explain Achilles' transvestism. The study's expansive approach, which includes Ovid and Ovidian reception, psychoanalytic perspectives and theorizations of gender in antiquity, makes it essential reading not only for students of Statius, but for students of Latin literature, and of gender in antiquity.
