The use of scientific terms has been avoided where possible, and when used, care has been taken to explain their meaning and application. In short this work is intended for the benefit of the business man, the investor, the ranger, the settler, and those generally, who, if given a little knowledge of Mines and Mining, might be induced to turn that knowledge to practical account. The first part proper, deals with rocks, giv ing a general idea of how they are formed and altered, and how mineral deposits of value to commerce occur in them, with the names and characters of rocks commonly met with in mining sections. The third part sketches the means em ployed to determine, or identify, the different ores and minerals, with a list of all known elements and their symbols. Part four contains a description of each of the ores of the metals, of use as such in the arts, with a knowledge of how they are tested by simple means, and the methods employed in their treatment on a commercial scale.

Strange as it may seem, the greater part of this story had been enacted before I realised that it would devolve on me to narrate it in book form. When first I saw vaguely this unwelcome task before me there was fresh in my mind not only the benefit which we had derived from studying the records of former Polar voyages, but the disappointment which we had sometimes suffered from the insufficient detail which they provided. It appeared to me in consequence that the first object in writing an account of a Polar voyage was the guidance of future voyagers the first duty of the writer was to his successors.
It may not be improper to preface these pages with an outline of the investigations which have been made to the south of Cape Horn, and within the Antarctic Circle, prior to my setting out on this voyage.

To make our analysis intuitive and understandable, numerous concrete examples illustrate our theoretical framework and concepts. The examples include gaming, fictional skits in leisure entertainment, and enigmas. The golden thread running through the text revisits the informational process and places the datum as its pivot. The epistemological perspective of our novel approach is that of “radical relativity”. This is based on the precept that a perceptual trace carries with it the spectrum of the process that has engendered it. Given this, the informational tracking endeavour tracks the meaning-making process, notably through interpretive scaffoldings that leads to plausible realities.
