N presenting this work to the public, the author does so in the hope that it will answer some of the questions that have been presented to him during the past, the solu tions of which were wholly obtained from actual experi ence. Fifteen years ago there was probably less literature extant upon the subject of railroad operation than upon any other branch of railroading. Such great advances have been made in train operation during this period that the few publications of that day are in a measure obsolete. This book does not apply to any particular railroad. It is based upon the rulings of the American Railway Association, as late as November, 1915. The text is the author's interpretation and amplification of these rulings and of the Standard Train Rules, Train Orders, Block Signals, and other practice which has been found necessary and advantageous in handling trains under various condi tions. I am' indebted to Professor Stuart Daggett, head of the Department of Railway Economics Of the University of California for many valuable suggestions. I am also indebted to Monroe C. Kidder, Superintendent of the Permanent Disability Rating Department of the California State Industrial Accident Commission, and to W. E. Boland, Chief Signal Engineer of the Southern Pacific Company, for their valuable assistance in the preparation of this work. It should be understood that if there is any difference between the author's interpretation of the rules and that of the Management of the Railroad where the reader is employed, the interpretation and rulings of that Railroad should be strictly adhered to.
The author presents this little book to the public, with a consciousness of its many imperfections, but yet with a belief that it will prove an agreeable companion in a journey over the railway. He claims for the work no literary merit. The vast field which it covers, and the short time spent in its compilation, has only enabled him to connect together a moiety of the material, gathered from innumerable sources, without bestowing labor upon its artistic finish, When it is recollected that many of the towns through which we pass are without their written history, and that all information in regard to them must be obtained from musty documents, imperfect records and oral testimony, the reader can in some degree appreciate the labor of compiling such a book, and, in charity, overlook its unavoidable faults. The entire ground covered by the work, has been travelled over by the writer, and as carefully surveyed as time and circumstances would admit; and everything of general interest has been embodied with as much detail as space would allow.In such a work as this it could not be expected that the author should give credit for every item of intelligence, or extract given, as the sources are so numerous, that notes would consume much of the space. He has endeavored to select the most reliable authorities, and to make the book correct in every particular. It would be a pleasure to acknowledge, in detail, the kindnesses received from the railroad officers and conductors, from the newspaper press, and from individuals in the towns along the route, many of whom made personal sacrifices to assist in the collection of material, but as the recital of the names alone would require a page or two, it would appear too much like ostentation. They all have the heartiest thanks of the author, who will recollect with gratitude their favors.

A rotting stump is home to many small creatures who in turn hasten the process of decay. Decomposers such as earthworms feed on dead organic matter and break down the debris into substances te-usable by new plants. Nature's efficient and economical processes continuously recycle important nutrients and are self-sustaining. On the other hand, man-made Operations (such as this railroad) need continuous maintenance and a steady input of energy.
We were rounding curves, sharp ones too, on a badly ballasted track, that caused the heavy Russian cars to oscillate alarmingly, notwithstanding the crawl at which we were proceeding. It was January — time of deep snow, frozen rivers, and biting atmosphere — everything around (except the interior of the car) was wintry to the last degree. Snow piled up in.
Europe, though it expended billions financing our needs, had still more funds in its purse. Some of these funds were diverted to Africa, Southern Europe, India and the Far East; likewise large amounts were ih vested ih Latin America. Here was a great field, and two of the nations — Great Britain and France — were not slow to grasp the opportunities which awaited them. British capitalists took over most of the tiny straggling, half-built railways scattered here and there throughout South America, financed and extended them and made them into large profitable systems. By means of British capital, tramway lines, power plants and comprehensive water systems were constructed in the various cities; companies were formed to develop agricultural areas, and mines and industries were exploited.
The favorable reception accorded Yards and Terminals, published by the Railway Age Gazette in 1906, and the many requests for a revised edition, encouraged the writer to undertake this revision. The results have been practically a new book. The scope has been greatly enlarged and the treatment broadened, so that the new material exceeds by a considerable amount the revised portions of the former book. Hence it seemed both wise and necessary to give the book a new title.
