Il arrive un moment où l'on comprend l'avan tage de savoir bien lire, mais c'est à l'âge où il répugne d'apprendre. Alors on se persuade que l'art de la lecture à haute voix n'est si négligé que que parce qu'il est trop difficile et on préfère y renoncer.

This book cannot fail to interest all who are desirous to understand the character and opinions of Goethe, or the state of literary society in Germany. The high opinion which Goethe entertained of Eckermann's fidelity, judgment, and comprehension of himself, is sufficiently proved, by his appointing him editor of his Posthumous Works. The light in which this book is regarded by the distinguished circle of which Goethe was the glory, may be seen by a reference to the first volume of Mrs. Jameson's late work, Winter Studies and Summer Rambles in Canada. It is, obviously, a most faithful record. Perhaps there is no instance in which one mind has been able to give out what it received from another, so little colored by its own substance.

Humanity seems gayest when dancing on the brink of a volcano. The culture of a period pre ceding a social cataclysm is marked by a spirit of light wit and sophisticated elegance which finds expression in a literature of a distinct type. This literature is light-hearted, audacious and self-con scious. It can treat with the most charming in souciance subjects which in another age would have been awkward or even vulgar. But with the riper experience of a period approaching its end the writers feel untrammeled in the choice of theme by pride or prejudice knowing that they will never transgress the line of good taste.

Asia and Africa, and braving the billows of the southern oceans to seek proselytes. 'and, as if to crown its achievements, it establishes itself in the heart of one of the greatest and most powerful governments of the world; establishes therein a theocratic government overriding all other government; putting the laws at defiance, and now seeks to consummate and perpetuate itself by acquiring a state sovereignty and by being placed on an equality with the other States of the Union.

And now follows the tale, Dar Ma'rotten, the creation of pure fancy, but one, it should be remarked, which is permeated by a noble idea. To tell in precise terms what moral or other Object the poet had in writing this story would be a pedantic attempt. As appears from the lines quoted, the author deprecates the attempt to mix up fancy and reality. Schiller said at the time The meaning is manifest and any one can see it. And this is true. In so far as there is a moral tendency in the tale, it is in the suggestiveness of the story as a whole. We are in the realm of fable and superstition, but from confused and irregular beginnings the world has finally emerged into a noble presence and holds out the promise of a great future. The grand temple of humanity has risen from its depths, the powers of evil have been turned to a beneficent use, and a busy multi tude lives and thrives in regions which were formerly the haunts of ignorance and superstition. This new world is ruled by three great powers wisdom, outward appearance (or show and forte. Love, the great educator, does not rule, for that is not her mission, but all culture is based on love. The pro found truth expressed in these words may not at first be recognized, but the more we study life, the evolution of nations and of individuals, the more clearly shall we understand its significance.

The most powerful and the most perfect expression of thought and feeling through the medium of oral language must be traced to the mastery of words. N othing is better suited to lead speakers and readers of English into an easy control of this language than the command of the phrase that perfectly expresses the thought. Every speaker's aim is to be heard and understood. A clear, crisp articula tion holds an audience as by the spell Of some irresistible power. The choice word, the correct phrase, are instru ments that may reach the heart, and awake the soul if they fall upon the car in melodious cadence; but if the utterance be harsh and discordant they fail to interest, fall upon deaf ears, and are as barren as seed sown on fallow ground. In language, nothing conduces so emphatically to the har mony of sounds as perfect phrasing — that is, the empha sizing oi the relation of clause to clause, and of sentence to sentence by the systematic grouping of words. The phrase consists usually of a few words which denote a single idea that forms a separate part of a sentence. In this respect it differs from the clause, which is a short sentence that forms a distinct part of a composition, para graph, or discourse. Correct phrasing is regulated by rests.
