The Object of the author of this history of the Prohibition movement in the United States of America has been to assemble the facts which have to do with the liquor problem and the temperance reform and to present the same in brief chronological form, emphasizing the major note of the movement towards Prohibition in each of the several periods with which the history deals.Each of the ten chapters into which this book has been subdivided deals with a distinct period of the temperance reform and a brief general survey of the movement in each period as the work of that period is related to the entire record of more than 300 years of temperance activity.The facts thus presented distinctly show that the Prohibition movement in the United States has been an evolution rather than a revolution, each period plainly revealing a more advanced temperance sentiment and a more aggressive attitude of opposition to the beverage liquor traffic than that shown in the preceding period.The volume thus presented represents research work extending over several years.
Since the turn of the twentieth century, telecommunications has shifted from traditional voice transport to data transport, although digitized voice is still a large contributor. This unique book ranges across the physical, biological and social sciences in the development of its primary theme, that there are nine major 'integrative levels' which can be recognised. The ardent evolutionist and opponent of Catholicism was impatient of a reserve that he felt to be an anachronism in science and an effective support Of reactionary ideas. It was, therefore, with a peculiar satisfaction that he received the invitation, after Virchow's death, to address the Berlin public. Among the many and distinguished honours that have been heaped upon him in the last ten years this was felt by him to hold a high place. He could at last submit freely, in the capital of his country, the massive foundations and the imposing structure of a doctrine which he holds to be no less established in science than valuable in the general cause of progress.
At a day when, whether-to our profit or to our loss, so many familiar landmarks are disappearing from our ken, or are in course of transformation into something, perhaps rich, but certainly strange, it may not be presumptuous to hope that this unpretentious chronicle of Life in a Yorkshire Village, may be of some thing more than sentimental value. If the mirror these pages hold up to life is small, at any rate it reflects manv far-reaching changes in the manner of living and in outlook of life, in the tasks of labour and the manner of their accomplishment shifting ideas, new ideals flit across it, it shows the slow tooth of time gnawing at and reshaping the customs, pastimes, philosophy, beliefs, and speech of our country folk. It is with these the historian of the future, when he renders count of the mettle of our pasture, will have to reckon.
