Although it is not under an expectation I shall be able to add any thing Of importance to the information contained in the works of those travellers who have visited this most interesting region, that I sit down to arrange into a narrative the notes and memoranda Of a long journey; yet, it is in the humble hope Of contributing something, which may dispose Sceptics and Unbelievers to feel surprised that things of such great antiquity as those customs described in this sacred fountain of truth should have been protected, or kept alive, from those changes incident to the lapse of time and vicissitudes Of human affairs, as if these had been preserved in their entire original state, to confirm to' all ages, the authenticity of that record which they are so wonderfully calculated to illustrate.

It must be acknowledged that the interest of the present documents is of a somewhat restricted kind. There are no very outstanding texts, nor do the letters, in general, show any of those more vivid or intimate touches seen in several of the papyri or ostraca from other sites, or the legal texts present any points of juristic importance; but there is much topo graphical material of value, and some useful evidence on me trology, nor are some of the texts, whether Greek or Coptic, wanting in philological interest. The main importance of the collection lies, however, less in details than in its ensemble, as presenting a picture of the life and activities of a monastic settlement. The work of editing the single texts has, naturally, been divided between us according to the language employed; but since documents of the same class were written now in Greek (which, however, is sometimes to be styled Greek only by courtesy) and now in Coptic, no distinction between the two languages has been made in our arrangement, and each of us has read the whole volume, adding notes, where notes sug gested themselves, to his colleague's commentary. Throughout the volume the topographical notes are, with very few excep tions, due to crum, who has written also section II Of the Introduction and compiled the Indexes; bell is responsible for section IV, on metrology.

IE we investigate the technical processes of past ages we find that changes were very slowly introduced, and that a method of attaining the desired result, having been brought to perfection, remained unaltered from generation to generation. This conservative habit is peculiarly to be found associated with the artistic crafts, which even to-day, in spite of the discoveries of chemists and the introduction of machinery, have undergone little modification.

Strict rules in composition are pedantic; better with some errors than hypercritically perfect. An epic poem should move the passions and affections with elegant and appropriate thoughts and incidents. The author takes the liberty of inserting his own comments and probabilities as to the real and fabu lous parts therein. The hypercritic muse may insist the measure be exact vet knows repeated couplets tire the ear and detract from nature's common sense.

Egypt being thus reduced by the Palmyrenians, the Barbari ans, who survived the battle of Naissus between Claudius and the Scythians, defending themselves with their carriages which went before them, marched towards Macedon, but were so distressed by the want of necessaries, that mauy of them and of their beasts perished with hunger. They were met likewise by the Roman cavalry, who having hilled many of them, drove the rest towards Mount Hmmus; where being surrounded by the Roman army, they lost a vast number of men. But a quarrel ensuing between the Roman horse and foot soldiers, the emperor wishing the foot: to engage the Barbarians, the Romans, afier a smart engagement, were defeated with considerable loss, but the cavalry, coming up immediately, redeemed in some degree the miscarriage of the ia fantry. After this battle, the Barbarians proceeded on their: march, and were pursued by the Romans. Rl'he pirates who cruized about Crete and Rhodes retired without doing any thing worthy of mention; and being attacked by the plague on their way home, some of them died in Thrace and some in Mace dom All that survived wereeither admitted into the Roman le gions, or had lands assigned for them to cultivate and so become husbandmen. Nor was the plague confined to the Barbarians alone, but began to infest the Romans, many of whom died, and amongst the rest Claudius, a person adorned with every virtue. His death was a severe loss to hls subjects, and was consequently much regretted by them. Quintillus, the brother of Claudius, was then declared emperor. He had reigned but a few months, and had performed nothing worthy of notice, before Aurelianus was raised to the imperial throne. Some writers inform us, that Quintillus was advised by his friends,' as soon as they heard of Aurelianus being made em peror,to die by his own hand, and give place voluntarily to a mam ofso much greater merit. They report, that he complied by open ingavein and bleeding to death. Aurelianus, having regulated the empire, went from Rome to Aquileia, and from thence into Pan nonia, which he was informed the Scythians were preparing to invade. For this reason he sent orders to the inhabitants of that country to carry into the towns all their corn and cattle, and every thing that could be of use to the enemy, in order to distress. Them with famine, with which they were already afflicted. The Barbarians having crossed the river into Pannonia had an engage ment, the result of which was nearly equal. But the same night.

Voltaire, as is well known, went sadly wrong over Aristarchus Philosop/zz'que, s.v. He said that Ari starchus 'is so obscure that Wallis was obliged to annotate him from one end to the other, in the effort to make him intelligible', and fur her that it was very doubtful whether the book attributed go tristarchus was really by him. Voltaire (misled, it is true, by a wrong reading in a passage of Plutarch, De fade in orbe lunae, c. 6) goes on to question whether Aristarchus had ever propounded the heliocentric hypothesis; and it is clear that the treatise which he regarded as suspect was Roberval's book, and that he confused this with the genuine work edited by Wallis. Nor could he have looked at the latter treatise in any but a very superficial way, or he would have seen that it is not in the least obscure, and that the commentary of Wallis is no more elaborate than would ordinarily be expected of an editor bringing out for the first time, with the aid of mss. Not of the best, a Greek text and translation of a mathematical treatise in which a number of geometrical propositions are assumed without proof and therefore require some elucidation.

The purpose of this book is to present a complete collection, subject to certain definitions and exceptions which will be mentioned later, of all the best extant Greek Epigrams. Although many epigrams not given here have in different ways a special interest of their own, none, it is hoped, have been excluded which are of the first excellence in any style. But, while it would be easy to agree on three — fourths of the matter to be included in such a scope, perhaps hardly any two persons would be in exact accordance with regard to the rest with many pieces which lie on the border line of excellence, the decision must be made on a balance of very slight considerations, and becomes in the end one rather of personal taste than of any fixed principle.
