Profits in the Long Run asks two questions: Are there persistent differences in profitability across firms? If so, what accounts for them? This book answers these questions using data for the 1000 largest US manufacturing firms in 1950 and 1972. It finds that there are persistent differences in profitability and market power across large US companies. Companies with persistently high profits are found to have high market shares and sell differentiated products. Mergers do not result in synergistic increases in profitability, but they do have an averaging effect. Companies with above normal profits have their profits lowered by mergers. Companies with initially below normal profits have them raised. In addition, the influence of other variables on long-run profitability, including risk, sales, diversification, growth and managerial control, is explored. The implications of antitrust policy are likewise addressed.

Owing to ill-health I missed the operations on the Tigris and the shatt-el-adhaim immediately after the capture of Baghdad. My account of this fighting has been written after consultation with regimental officers and brigade, divisional, and corps Staff officers. The local perspective of the battalion is concentrated too much on a single point; and the wider perspective of the Staff is too general and comprehensive for the detailed picture. One perspective is the complement of the other. But descriptions of battles compiled at second hand must always be wanting in life. The non-military reader may find the narrative of these operations a little tedious after the dramatic events that preceded them.

Again a new home mission study book is added to the lengthening series of such books issued by the Council of Women for Home Missions and the Missionary Education Movement. Their purpose primarily is to lead Christian people to the active practise of that cardinal principle of Christ, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.Obviously, if our neighbor is to be loved, he must be known. We must realize something of his racial mind and spirit, his handicaps, his achievements, his capacities, his horizon, his goals. Our seeking to know him must be on the basis of the broadest sympathy. In the friend liest and most helpful spirit we should sincerely desire to understand him in the place where he is and to apprehend something of the road by which he came and the direction of his highest and best aspirations, that we may, so far as we can, make it possible for him to attain his best in our common civilization. We should at the same time quite as earnestly seek to know ourselves in respect to our limitations, achievements, and goals in the building of the social order.It is a valued privilege to have as the author of The Trend of the Races a gifted and honored representative of the Negro people.

The names are taken haphazard from the list, and with no idea of order. In each of these countries are members of the Association, and the monthly magazine goes there regularly. In many cases definite results have been accomplished in the formation of allied bodies in different parts of the world elsewhere Town Planning schemes have been forwarded or, again, model villages have been founded on co-partnership lines. Everywhere this message of the Garden City has been hailed with acclamation by men and women by whom the existing state of affairs is seen to be not only ugliness and inconvenience, but degradation — the loss of the love of the beautiful things of earth, the obsession of the human mind with the things that are really of little value, and the neglect of the great and overwhelming problems of existence.
