Planets have excited the minds of man since prehistory. In our own time planetary science has become a rapidly developing area of astronomical research, as the instruments carried by spacecraft have vastly increased our knowledge of planetary surfaces and interiors. the rocky planets of the inner solar system bear countless craters, scars of their encounters with innumerable meteorites, although the active surface of the earth has contrived to erase these features from our own planet. The outer giants, particularly Jupiter, have vigorous atmospheres, while Io, a satellite of Jupiter, has sulphur volcanoes. In this book Alan Cook explains how the mechanical properties of the planets are determined, how planetary materials behave at high pressure, and how celestial mechanics and the quantum physics of highly condensed matter may be combined to determine the general constitution of the planets.
This is a collectionof papers given at SBL International Meetings 2009-2011, which investigate theinherent spatiality of human existence. The contributors discuss ancientMediterranean texts and societies from a decidedly spatial perspective,debating over such issues as narratological space, critical spatiality,sociological theories on space, space and identity, space and body. The volumeconsists of three parts and commences with three studies focusing ontheoretical approaches towards spatial analysis and application of the theoryto specific Old and New Testament texts. The essays in the second part examinethe sacred space and the formation of identity, with particular attention toJerusalem and the temple seen as sacred space and the lived experience of authors describing this space in variousways. The third part discusses the spatial theory and its application to avariety of texts ranging from the Epic of Gilgamesh to the New Testament.
Why do nation states choose to develop national space programs? How can they justify national efforts to acquire capabilities by arguing for membership of the space club? This book provides a unique perspective of the past, current and future of space exploration and technological development in world politics. A country that sees itself as a power deserving of a seat at the table of world governance is expected to race for space. Based on a rich and detailed analysis of a range of space programs of states which are not usually at the focus of world politics and its research, the author shows that joining the space club is a legitimate and rational decision. In the early days the region in the vicinity of the portage, the valleys of the St. Joseph and the Kankakee, abounded in a great variety of fur-bearing animals. It was well known among the Indian tribes on account of its excellence as a hunting ground. Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac writing of the lower Peninsula Of Michigan in 1701, says: There are so many vast prairies dotted with woods, thickets and vines where the waters Of the streams keep the shores always green and the reaper has left unmown the luxuriant grasses which fatten buffaloes of enormous size. The plain along the eastern bank of the St. Joseph river south of Niles, Michigan, was a noted buffalo resort known to the French as Pare aux vaches and to the Indians as The cow-pasture, or cow-pens. Further up the river the field west and south Of the portage landing, was called at the time Of the visit Of Charlevoix in 1721, La Prairie de Tete la Boeuf (buffalo Head Prairie).
