This latter fact caused a profound change among the church men of the captaincy-general of Guatemala. A few years before, the church had been the most dependable as well as the most powerful part of the Spanish machinery for the administra tion of the Indies; the clergy, always loyal themselves, could be counted upon to. Inculcate in the minds of their spiritual charges the duty of faithfulness and of submission to the Catho lic sovereigns. Now, many of the Isthmian clergy, fearful lest they; in turn, be shorn of their ancient power and rich endow ments, if they remained linked politically with Spain, joined the other revolutionists in the hope of becoming the dominant element in an oligarchy to be established under an independent flag.1 It is true, the restoration of the degenerate and craven House of Bourbon to the Spanish throne, followed by the re actionary measures of Ferdinand VII., was reflected in Guate mala by a slight counter-revolutionary movement — especially among the higher clergy and the friars 2 but this shifting was not of sufficient importance to delay for long the winning of independence.
This Memoir has been prepared by request of the family, and through strong impulses of personal affection; for we were of the same age, and had worked side by side for thirty years. But in depicting a character so elevated and sincere, one feels obliged to restrain the natural tendency to eulogium.I have especially tried to represent the environment and development of Dr. Boyce's early life in Charleston, at Brown University, and at Princeton Theological Seminary, and to bring out his labors as editor in Charleston, pastor in Columbia, and professor in Furman University. The part which he took in the war, and in South Carolina politics, is not overlooked.As his recognized life-work was the foundation and establishment of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, a biography of him could hardly fail to comprise a history of that institution. But this is for the most part thrown into distinct chapters, which some readers can pass over if they like. For the historical sketch of the institution I have carefully used printed and manuscript records, besides recollections which go back almost to the beginning of the movement.
It is not surprising that comparatively little is known of the Covenanters of Galloway. Their story is not to be found in any single volume, but must be gleaned here and there from many scarce and curious books and other out-of-the-way sources. Believing the story worthy of telling, and of preserving, I have endeavoured to gather the threads of it together, and the following pages are the result. It has been a labour of love, carried on amidst many difficulties, and it has assumed proportions I little dreamed of when I began. No one is more conscious of its defects and short-comings than I am myself, but when it became a question of this or nothing, I preferred this. I have freely availed myself of the works of others, and I have not hesitated to follow Wodrow closely, notwithstanding all that has been said against him. The articles in the latter part of the volume, so placed to be less cumbersome, are not in chronological order.

Republicanism and Liberalism in America and the German States represents the cooperative effort of a group of American and German scholars to move the historical debate on Republicanism and Liberalism to a new stage. Previously, the relationship between Republican and Liberal ideas, concepts and world views has been discussed in the context of American revolutionary and late eighteenth-century history. While the German states did not experience successful revolutions like those in North America and France, Republican and Liberal ideas and 'language' deeply affected German political thinking and culture, especially in the southern states. The essays published in this book expand the time frame of the debate into the first half of the nineteenth century, applying an innovative and comparative German-American perspective. By systematically studying the similarities and differences in the understanding of Republicanism and Liberalism in the United States and German states, the collection stimulates efforts toward a comprehensive interpretation of political, intellectual and social developments in the 'modernizing' Atlantic world of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
In Religion and the Obligations of Citizenship Paul J. Weithman asks whether citizens in a liberal democracy may base their votes and their public political arguments on their religious beliefs. Drawing on empirical studies of how religion actually functions in politics, he challenges the standard view that citizens who rely on religious reasons must be prepared to make good their arguments by appealing to reasons that are 'accessible' to others. He contends that churches contribute to democracy by enriching political debate and by facilitating political participation, especially among the poor and minorities, and as a consequence, citizens acquire religiously based political views and diverse views of their own citizenship. He concludes that the philosophical view which most defensibly accommodates this diversity is one that allows ordinary citizens to draw on the views their churches have formed when voting and offering public arguments for their political positions.
