I was born in the Green River Country, Hart County, Kentucky, May 30th, 1851. I was a slave until the Emancipation. My parents left me and went to the Good Land when 1 was yet a boy. My chances for an education have not been good. In that matter, however, I have done what I could. I have labored with my hands, taught school, and preached a risen, present Savior — not a bad lot after all. I am now an Elder in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the stationed pastor at Springfield, Ohio, and General Financial Agent of Wilberforce University. With this brief account of myself, I pass to notice the Institution in whose interest I have written, and whose permanent endowment I hope to secure.Wilberforce University is situated three and one-half miles North-East of Xenia, Greene County, Ohio; surrounded by beautiful farms, and from the West, looked down upon by a group of heavily wooded hills. It is one of the most desirable College sites in Ohio. The locality is eminently healthy.
The following chapters present, in organized arrangement, part of the material included in a series of lectures on vocational and industrial psychology. Only those topics are considered which bear more or less directly on the appraisal of human character, for definite and usually for practical purposes. The book does not undertake to outline plans for vocational guidance, nor to prescribe specific procedures in personnel work. It offers, instead, a general and nontechnical survey of the principal methods relied on in judging human traits.Traditional methods are criticized, and effort is made to suggest improvement in the technic of applying these methods or in interpreting the results derived from their use. The present status of the methods of mental measurement in various fields is surveyed, in the endeavor to communicate a general understanding of the principals underlying these methods.

At least since the seventeenth century, the traditional God of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam has been under pressure to conform to the scientific worldview. Across the monotheistic traditions there has emerged a liberal conception of God compatible with a thoroughgoing naturalism. For many, this liberal new God is the only credible God. But is it a useful God? Does belief in so malleable a deity come from, or lead to, different political, moral, psychological, or aesthetic phenomena from atheism?A Plausible God evaluates the new God by analyzing the theology of three recent Jewish thinkers -Mordechai Kaplan, Michael Lerner, and Arthur Green-and compares faith in the new God to disbelief in any gods.
