An ethnographic study of how funeral director's semantically construct the activity of funeral work reveals a central metaphor, "smoothness", that organizes the funeral director's concept of his work role. The metaphor is defined ostensively by everyday strategies for doing funeral directing: establishing operating procedures, staffing scenes, creating slack, reframin^ removal settings, restoring the remains, familiarizing the environment, and structuring interactions. These activities allow the funeral director to avoid mistakes and events which might mar the funeral process and thereby link funeral directing to other occupations that manage human crises.
Leslie's admirable biography must always remain the great authority on Constables personal history， yet no book， however accurate and sympathetic， which dates from the forties， could foresee the enormous change which has taken place in landscape painting since Constables death. Whatever his responsibility for the artistic revolution with which his name is associated. Constable undoubtedly stands at the parting of the ways between the old masters and the moderns， for he was the first to prove that a landscape might be a good picture， and also be really like nature. The aim of his great predecessors had been to make noble compositions， with just as much resemblance to nature as was convenient The aim of his successors has been to get a sincere likeness to nature， while pictorial quality seems too often to be regarded as a subordinate matter.Since the excellence of Leslie's work renders any lengthy detailed biography unnecessary， the main facts of Constable's life are here dealt with in a short introduction， while the chief part of this little book has been devoted to supplementing Leslie on the technical side by tracing Constables connection with his predecessors， by describing the development of his painting， and of giving a brief account of the evolution of Modem Landscape in England and on the Continent.I have to thank Mr. G. A. Phillips for kindly allowing me to reproduce the charming picture in his possession， and Mr. Augrustin Rischgitz， whose beautiful photographs， specially made for this work from a series of Constable's sketches at South Kensington， form the greater part of (he illustrations.
My readers will be divided between those who think that I have not told enough, that I have told too much, and that I had better have told nothing at all. I bow my head to them all.The list of those to whom my thanks are due is too long to set out in a preface. It would include the names of my admirable staff, of sailors, soldiers, and civilians of many countries besides our own in almost every walk of life and even of a few of our late enemies. No drama, no film story yet written has been so enthralling as our daily repertory on the dimly-lighted stage set in a corner of the granite building in Westminster. In a century after we, with our war-weariness, are dead and gone the Great War will be a quarry for tales of adventure, of high endeavour, and of splendid achievement: when that time comes even some of the humbler actors who play their part in these pages may be seen through a haze of romance.
The wind by this time had risen to a petty gale, and came over the brow Of the cliffs from the sea with considerable force. The blue sea was aglitter with foam-heads, and in the dim haze of the horizon one seemed to discern, or imagine, the mass Of the adjacent continent. Sea-birds cried and flew 'twixt the cliff and the water, and a small steamer ploughed heavily across the middle distance, rounding the Island from Shanklin or Ventnor. I made these Observations with a mind pleasantly and idly occupied, and then I turned and saw Miss Lovell. She was at the edge Of the cliff, a hundred yards away, and I do not think she was aware Of my presence. She gave me at that distance but the impression Of a white figure, with blown skirts, for the wind was romping with her. Yet even so I was attracted by the picture she made, instinct apparently with youth and freshness, and facing that deep void beneath her with the magnificent unconsciousness Of health. And so in my course I moved slowly in her direction, with some curiosity to see her closer, that innocent curiosity which is bred in a holiday mood and in a place Of strangers. It was when I was already' within a dozen paces Of her that she withdrew her gaze from the sea, and turned to go. Then I had a clear sight Of her. She was above the mean height Of women, as young as the spring, frank and bright Of eye, and full Of warm blood. T 0 that her complexion spoke, for her face was delicately flushed and happy. She almost smiled at me, as our looks met, and I was conscious that it would have been the smile Of mere animal content; or rather, I should say the ebullition Of an innocent child abandoned to its mood. As it was, the habit Of restraint which in that exhilaration she had thrown aside returned in time; and she passed me with a very proper face, demure and conscious; but the wanton wind still played tricks with her skirt.
