The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a site of intense morbidity for millions of people, especially young, pre-menopausal women. Central to TMJ afflictions are the cartilaginous tissues of the TMJ, especially those of the disc and condylar cartilage, which play crucial roles in normal function of this unusual joint. Damage or disease to these tissues significantly impacts a patient's quality of life by making common activities such as talking and eating difficult and painful. Unfortunately, these tissues have limited ability to heal, necessitating the development of treatments for repair or replacement. The burgeoning field of tissue engineering holds promise that replacement tissues can be constructed in the laboratory to recapitulate the functional requirements of native tissues. This book outlines the biomechanical, biochemical, and anatomical characteristics of the disc and condylar cartilage, and also provides a historical perspective of past and current TMJ treatments and previous tissue engineering efforts. This book was written to serve as a reference for researchers seeking to learn about the TMJ, for undergraduate and graduate level courses, and as a compendium of TMJ tissue engineering design criteria. Table of Contents: The Temporomandibular Joint / Fibrocartilage of the TMJ Disc / Cartilage of the Mandibular Condyle / Tissue Engineering of the Disc / Tissue Engineering of the Mandibular Condyle / Current Perspectives

This publication brings together an international panel of highly skilled and renowned surgical experts introducing the reader to the latest innovations in surgical endoscopy and laparoscopy. In recent years there has been a wide range of innovations and new developments in gastrointestinal endoscopy. New technical devices based on high magnification have further progressed to the dimension of microscopic endoscopy. Moreover, the visual assessment of the entire small bowel and the biliary/pancreatic system has become possible. These developments have revolutionized the approach to diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. The borders between traditional medical and surgical ndoscopy are beginning to disappear, making room for more interaction across medical and surgical disciplines. Integrating gastroenterological and surgical points of view on these modern technologies will greatly benefit the patients. Those involved in the surgical treatment of gastrointestinal diseases, be it gastroenterological surgeons or surgical gastroenterologists, will find a wealth of information in this publication.

Temporomandibular (jaw) joint diseases and disorders are estimated to affect 10 million Americans every year with the majority of those seeking treatment being women in their childbearing years. Researchers generally agree that the most common temporomandibular diseases and disorders fall into three main categories: arthritis, internal derangement of the joint, and/or myofascial pain. This special issue of Cells Tissues Organs is a selection of papers presented at the second meeting of the Temporomandibular Joint Association held in May 2002. The meeting focused on the role that osteoarthritis and muscle mechanics play in temporomandibular joint diseases and disorders. Currently there are no established treatments for temporomandibular joint conditions, so that the therapies patients receive generally reflect the personal views and practices of the provider. These papers will serve as a reference for clinical and basic research in this field, as well as a stimulus for future investigations. Clinicians dealing with chronic musculoskeletal disorders such as arthritis will benefit by expanding their perspective to include new knowledge about their fields as well as about similar disorders of the head and neck. Basic and translational researchers in the same fields should read these papers because we hope that this will encourage them to evaluate both the unique and the generalized features of research related to temporomandibular disorders.

Low back pain is a common disorder in the clinical treatment of the Department of Orthopedics. Lumbar intervertebral disc degeneration is a main reason for the chronic pain and the process is difficult to reverse. Traditional treatment methods include conservative treatment and surgical treatment. Although the clinical symptoms caused by intervertebral disc degeneration can be alleviated to a certain extent, these treatment methods do not solve the fundamental issues and they also produce corresponding complications. The rise of tissue engineering technology and its applications in different fields have brought new ideas for the treatment of intervertebral disc degeneration. This book discusses the fundamentals as well as more recent developments in stem cell therapy and tissue engineering technology and offers an alternative for treating degeneration of intervertebral discs.
