Inferential role semantics

The contents of the preceding volume brought the reader down to about the end of July 1786, when the poet was await ing the appearance of the Kilmarnock Edition of his poems. Only one poetical piece in this second volume The Farewell commemorates that period of gloom. Dawn was nearer than he thought. Jean Armour's safe delivery of twin-children, on 3d September of that year, and the happy domestic arrange ment that followed, helped to make matters flow more smoothly with the forlorn poet. On the following day, a poet of a difi'erent stamp, the venerable Dr. Blacklock of Edinburgh, who was regarded as the centre of a literary circle in that city, wrote to his friend, the Rev. Dr. Lawrie, parish minister of London, a letter which is supposed to have had consider able efi'ect on the after career of Burns. Its subject was the wonderful volume of poetry that had issued from the Kilmar nock Press about five weeks previously, and which Dr. Lawrie had transmitted to Edinburgh to excite the blind bard's astonishment, and elicit his Opinion of its contents. That letter concluded with an expression of the writer's regret that although another copy of Buras's poems had been sought with diligence and ardor, it could not be procured because the whole impression was exhausted. It were therefore, he added, much to be wished, for the sake of the young man, that a second edition more numerous than the former could immediately be printed.

Mr. Voysey. Well? [edward doesn't answer. Refer ence to the papers seems to overwhelm him with shame. Mr. Voysey goes on with cheerful impatience] Come, come, my dear boy, you mustn't take it like this. You're puzzled and worried, of course. But Why didn't you come down to me on Saturday night? I expected you I told you to come. Then your mother was wondering, of course, why you weren't with us for dinner yesterday. Edward. I went through all the papers twice. I wanted to make quite sure.

IT is a matter of surprise that Robert Mont gomery Bird has hitherto escaped the biographer. Excepting the brief mention in textbooks and encyclopedias, virtually nothing has been written of a man whose name was once well known to the reading public of both America and England. Cast into cacophonous German, one of his novels found its way'to the continent and ran through successive editions. It is, of course, futile to deprecate the verdicts of time as it is unsafe to predict them. It is rather the purpose of this book to set forth the claims of Dr. Bird, such as they are, to rank among American men of letters; and incidentally to explore a character of great charm that made him loved of all that knew him.

One of the key questions in cognitive psychology is how people represent knowledge about concepts such as football or love. Some researchers have proposed that concepts are represented in human memory by the sensorimotor systems that underlie interaction with the outside world. These theories represent developments in cognitive science to view cognition no longer in terms of abstract information processing, but in terms of perception and action. In other words, cognition is grounded in embodied experiences. Studies show that sensory perception and motor actions support understanding of words and object concepts. Moreover, even understanding of abstract and emotion concepts can be shown to rely on more concrete, embodied experiences. Finally, language itself can be shown to be grounded in sensorimotor processes. This book brings together theoretical arguments and empirical evidence from several key researchers in this field to support this framework.

Existing models of state formation are derived primarily from early Western European experience, and are misleading when applied to nation-states struggling to consolidate their dominion in the present period. In this volume, scholars suggest that the Western European model of armies waging war on behalf of sovereign states does not hold universally. The importance of 'irregular' armed forces - militias, guerrillas, paramilitaries, mercenaries, bandits, vigilantes, police, and so on - has been seriously neglected in the literature on this subject. The case studies in this book suggest, among other things, that the creation of the nation-state as a secure political entity rests as much on 'irregular' as regular armed forces. For most of the 'developing' world, the state's legitimacy has been difficult to achieve, constantly eroding or challenged by irregular armed forces within a country's borders. No account of modern state formation can be considered complete without attending to irregular forces.

This book attempts to bridge the gulf that still exists between 'literary' and 'philosophical' interpreters of Plato by looking at his use of characterization. Characterization is intrinsic to dramatic form and a concern with human character in an ethical sense pervades the dialogues on the discursive level. Form and content are further reciprocally related through Plato's discursive preoccupation with literary characterization. Two opening chapters examine the methodological issues involved in reading Plato 'as drama' and a set of questions surrounding Greek 'character' words (especially ethos), including ancient Greek views about the influence of dramatic character on an audience. The figure of Sokrates qua Platonic 'hero' also receives preliminary discussion. The remaining chapters offer close readings of select dialogues, chosen to show the wide range of ways in which Plato uses his characters, with special emphasis on the kaleidoscopic figure of Sokrates and on Plato's own relationship to his 'dramatic' hero.

This study contributes to debate about the portraits of Paul in Acts and his epistles by considering Paul's Miletus speech (Acts 20.18b-35) and identifies and compares major themes in Luke and Paul's views of Christian leadership. Comparisons with Jesus' speeches in Luke show how Lukan the speech is and, with 1 Thessalonians, how Pauline it is. The speech calls the Ephesian elders to service after Paul's departure to Jerusalem, focusing on: faithful fulfilment of leadership responsibility; suffering; attitudes to wealth and work; and the death of Jesus. Paul models Christian leadership for the elders. Parallels in Luke highlight his view of Christian leadership - modelled by Jesus and taught to his disciples, and modelled by Paul and taught to the elders. Study of 1 Thessalonians identifies a remarkably similar portrait of Christian leadership. The Miletus speech is close in thought, presentation and vocabulary to an early, indubitably Pauline letter.
