Since this book aims at being popular, a large number of biographical details have been introduced; in doing this it has seemed unnecessary to dwell on the lives of really great men like Blake or Wren; they belong to English history rather than to the story of their college. Much more space has been devoted to the men who in their day played a great part in Oxford, or to those who once were well known, though forgotten now. The buildings of Wadham have changed so little that it has seemed better to Show them as they are rather than to reproduce old views; the Loggan plate is of course a necessary exception. I am especially grateful to Mr. Gardiner for his kindness in reading through my book when in type-written sheets; he saved me from several mistakes, and made many valuable suggestions.
I record with pleasure my obligation to Pro fessor Edward Charming, of Harvard College, 'for very many valuable suggestions; and also to Mr. Albert Matthews, whose knowledge of the lan guage and customs of the period has been of great service to me.
The book is really in two parts, the first part covering the general definitions of finance; the second giving specific information regarding the various issues of preferred and guaranteed stocks which are generally classed among the investment issues. Many other small books furnish information regarding bonds, quota tions, etc., etc., but this specific and useful in formation has not, as far as the writer knows, been heretofore presented for popular uses, in this particular way. Although the definitions are all arranged alphabetically in dictionary style, yet, to facili tate practical use of the volume, an alphabetical index is inserted in the back.

In this volume are presented two of the earlier writings of Karl Marx, with a special Introduction to each by Frederick Engels.The first, entitled Wage-Labor and Capital, was translated for us by Dr. Harriet E. Lothrop, of Boston, from the standard German edition prepared by Engels in 1891. This is the only complete English edition of it that has yet appeared, and its accuracy was doubly secured by a critical comparison of its every sentence with the German text, made at the request of the translator by Herman Simpson, of New York, who also added foot-. notes wherever comment seemed needful. In the performance of their respective task, both kept in mind the allimportant consideration, that in the works of Marx, as in all works, truly scientific, the exact expression is an essential factor and should not, therefore, be sacrificed to literary style in its transfer from one language to another.To those who are already acquainted with Marx's later essay on Value, Price, and Profit, this much earlier one on Wage-Labor and Capital will no doubt seem somewhat familiar. Still more familiar will both appear to the industrious reader of Capital. And for obvious reasons.
