Self-government is the fundamental principle of a Re public; pre-eminently of the American Republic. It is the keynote of the Declaration of Independence, and the foundation of the Constitution. Governments derive their just powers from the con sent of the governed.
This text offers a comprehensive overview of new approaches to health-related behaviour from a self-regulation perspective. The authors outline the assumptions on which self-regulation theories are based, discuss recent research and draw out the implications for practice with a particular focus on changing health behaviour. The book is arranged in two sections – Goal Setting and Goal Activation in Health Behaviour and Goal Striving and Goal Persistence. The epilogue compares self-regulation theories with the prevailing social-cognitive models.

There are few countries in Europe which contain within an area as small as the British Isles such a variety of natural environments and cultures as Yugoslavia. This book provides a survey of the history of the South Slav peoples who came together at the end of the First World War to form the first Yugoslav kingdom, and who emerged from the chaos of the Second World War to become citizens of a socialist federal republic, led by the Communist Party under the leadership of Marshal Tito. Beginning in Roman times, the book traces the rise and fall of the medieval Slav principalities, the dominance of the Ottoman and Habsburg empires, the proclamation of the kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in 1918, the disastrous effects of the German occupation and the creation of a new socialist order under President Tito.
This history of the English royal manor of Havering, Essex, illustrates life at one extreme of the spectrum of personal and collective freedom during the later Middle Ages, revealing the kinds of patterns which could emerge when medieval people were placed in a setting of unusual independence. As residents of a manor held by the crown, they profited from royal administrative neglect. As tenants of the ancient royal demesne, they had special legal rights and economic privileges. Havering's dominant families controlled the legal and administrative life of their community through the powerful manor court. The tenants combined effectively to prevent outside interference in their affairs, despite the individualistic self-interest manifest in their economic dealings. In 1465 the tenants obtained a royal charter which established Havering as a formal Liberty, with its own justices of the peace. By the end of the fifteenth century Havering displayed many characteristics commonly associated with the Elizabethan and Jacobean periods.
This book is the first full account of the development of rural self-government in Russia from the emancipation of the serfs to its bureaucratisation in the counter-reforms of 1889–90. Through analysis of central and provincial perceptions of local self-government and conflicting ideologies of reform. Professor Pearson challenges the conventional view of the counter-reforms as a concession to gentry class interests and a reaction against 'zemstvo' political activity.
