What appears to be a suicide is soon discovered to be a murder by the team investigating the death. There are several persons connected to the death in some way. It's interesting to see how the investigation progresses without modern forensic capabilities. Each of the people involved know certain aspects which are not known to the others so the mystery seems even more confusing. There are surprising twists and turns with the solution being totally unforseen. I highly recommend this mystery. It is not overly verbose and doesn't have repetition of the evidence over and over. It is a very clever and complicated plot. It's the best mystery I've read in quite a while.
The mystery story had an interesting twist, at the end. The writing took far too long to get there. Long build-up to a not-very-engaging crime several chapters before the protagonists became involved in attempting to solve the mystery (everyone going about their uninteresting everyday lives, making some allusions to past cases and past glory they're too occupied to explain). Then a rather unconvincing romance of one hero abruptly declaring deep love for a suspect (to somehow add some drama and explain later shoddy unprofessional detective work?) The story here, is told from two persons' points of view. The greatest success is in achieving two distinct, recognizable voices. Unfortunately neither of them are very compelling after awhile. Some parts of the dialogue was snappy and funny, but around halfway through I wasn't all that interested. Kudos for attempting to create a spunky smart old-timely heroine and tragic intelligent gentleman hero, who both have the respect and admiration of their peers.
A mystery set in long ago days. Story is told by two different people in alternating chapters, and the caste of characters is a bit hard to keep track of who is who.
I left this old novel on my Kindle unread for quite a while before picking it tonight. I couldn't put it down and read until I finished it at one AM. It is the most convoluted mystery I have read in years. I guessed one factor, but the denouement took me completely by surprise. All I can say is, read it yourself.
Loved this book. Well written. The characters were engaging. Even though the book was written years and years ago the plotline and characters were timeless. It left me wanting more.
Pardon the pun. Not a ton of shootem' up. But I like it that she has a big hybrid wolf-malamute dog. I used to raise Mals for a number of years and I feel the love she has for this dog. The story is different that its set way up north so give it some slack and get used to it. I'm not sure but I think I read that this was her first books I will look forward to the next to the next COOL READ!!
Loved it. Was funny and mystery all in one. Nice to read more than one account of a story. Left me wondering who and why.
Thought this book was an enjoyable read. Really like the author and have bought all of her books. This mystery made me feel like I was watching an old black and white mystery film.
