This is a great book for any Edward Lear or old book fan. Great illustrations and such interesting stories.
In the introduction, Naomi Lewis writes that in October 1866 Lear wrote to a friend: "I have been preparing a little book for some time past, the originality of which will at least strike those who may not approve at all of its contents." Count me among those whose approval did not win. The originality of Lear's "songs" notwithstanding, I myself prefer Morgenstern or Carroll for literary nonsense, for unlike Lear, theirs is at least mildly philosophical (even if it involves making fun of philosophers in Morgenstern's case).
The Nonsense Songs are fun to read with children. Not so useful as songs because the book contains only the lyrics. Would be useful as songs if book included "To be sung to the tune of....."
Loved the poems - highly amusing and with a lovely meter. Disappointed by the stories. Strongly recommend, however old you are, to read the poems. They're an easy read and they'll make you smile. Given the book is free there is nothing to lose!
Every man, woman or child should have this. Bought it for 12 year old niece and she enjoys it as much as an old Aunty does. Really good quality book with everything in it !!!!!
The Owl and the Pussycat is everybody's favourite, but the Jumblies was a real find and the Pobble has a loyal fan in my daughter. Excellent.
great
only for study. no real revalance to my world
