Great book on early Wyoming. If you like this book you will want to read the following 99 cent books on early Wyoming area: 1 The Journal of a Fur-Trading Expedition on the Upper Missouri 1812-1813 2 The Banditti of the Plains, or the Cattleman's Invasion of Wyoming in 1892 (1894) 3 The Conquest of the Missouri, being the Story of the Life and Exploits of Captain Grant Marsh (1909) 4 Early Fur Hunters, Mountain Men, and Explorers of Wyoming (1918) 5 Wyoming Pioneer Stories (1918) 6 Vigilante Days and Ways: the pioneers of the Rockies; the makers and making of Montana and Idaho (1912) 7 Historical Sketch of the Flathead Indian Nation from the Year 1813 to 1890 ... and Sketches of History, Trapping and Trading in the Early Days (1890)

E. L. Kolb and his brother navigated the Green River from Green River, Wyoming to the Colorado River and eventually to the Sea of Cortez. This is a good description of their trip. They photographed the trip with still and motion pictures. I have rafted the parts of this trip between Flaming Gorge Dam and the end of the Grand Canyon that don't involve the reservoir waters and the scenery and rapids are much as they are described in the book. It's a good read before boating these waters.

Great History

Blair Oram

While rereading this historic narrative, I was blessed again with an appreciation for those, like the Kolb brothers, who have contributed so much to our unique American fabric. The weaving of history and adventure is complete in their exciting story, which except for a few had experienced up to that day!

D. Mack

Try reading this historical account with a map to see the progress these brave men made a century ago. Worthwhile.

I purchased the hard cover version because the paperback version stated it might not contain original photos yet the hardback did not so I assumed it was included.... yet this one did not include those pictures either.

The editing is not perfect but the style of writing very much works. There is a sense of the untamed and of the deep difficulties faced by the two brothers as they attempt to move from being novices with their boats to taking on some of the most challenging rapids in the world. This book gives a glimpse into a world that has long since vanished, well worth picking up.

This is one gripping narrative.
