This study is an attempt to understand the political and economic dynamics of eighteenth-century Gujarat. The aspects of the interpenetration of trade and politics and the complex nature of relationship among rulers, merchants and producers have been analysed mainly on the basis of information culled from the archives of the Dutch and the English East India Companies.
