During recent years, the influence of the immune system and xenobiotic metabolism on the pathogenesis of skin diseases has become evident. This can be observed in disorders such as atopic diseases and atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, skin tumors as well as extrinsic skin aging. Consequently, researchers from the fields of dermatology, environmental research and toxicology have joined in a meeting to advance the interdisciplinary translational research. Highlights are published as original papers or reviews in this special topic issue. The contributions written by renowned experts discuss topics ranging from photoprotection beyond ultraviolet radiation to porphyria, and from actinic keratosis and nanocarriers to cytochrome P450 isoenzymes.
