内容简介

The fi rst chapter gives a short overview concerning the anatomy and the pathophysiology of stroke. The burden and risk factors of stroke are the topic of the second chapter. The concept of the ischaemic penumbra is handled in the next chapter. The chapter on neuroplasticity and neurorecovery mainly deals with the rehabilitation of stroke patients. The classifi cation of stroke subtypes by Bo Norrving is probably the most useful chapter of this book. Neuroimaging is also a very practical chapter, although mainly focusing on computed tomography examination of the brain. The ultrasound chapter in acute ischaemic stroke is well written and gives an excellent overview of the possibilities of the different techniques. Stroke units are extremely useful for the management of acute patients and it was worthwhile to dedicate a separate chapter to this topic. Surprisingly, there is a small chapter separately dedicated to the treatment of hypertension, hyperglycaemia and hyperthermia. The chapter on thrombolytic treatment by Nils Walgren is very well written and gives an excellent update on the actual views concerning the intravenous thrombolysis treatment with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator. The chapter on management of stroke by neuroprotection overlaps with a previous chapter. The chapter on late post stroke complications is again handled quite superfi cially. The chapter on secondary prevention by medical treatment is well elaborated and contains an extensive reference list. The use of surgical and endovascular intervention for the secondary prevention of stroke is critically analyzed by Peter Rothwell. The chapter on intracerebral haemorrhage is very extensive and covers the whole topic very well.
