Recent advances in neuroprotective approaches for the treatment of acute ischaemic stroke have led to a consensus among leading experts about the necessity of treating stroke as a medical emergency. In this publication international specialists review strategies in the treatment of acute ischaemic stroke and the future potential of neuroprotectants presently under clinical evaluation. Current neuroprotective approaches require administration within a narrow therapeutic window in order to successfully salvage the ischaemic penumbria. Special attention is given in this volume to the neuroprotective activity of ProsynapTM (Lubeluzole), a benzothiazole compound in late clinical evaluation for the treatment of stroke. Neurologists, stroke specialists, emergency medicine physicians and technicians, nurses and to some extent general practitioners, will benefit from the information contained in this important publication.
