内容简介

Plant-derived sugars and lignocellulosic biomass are considered feasible, renewable alternatives to the use of petroleum as an industrial feedstock. In this scenario, the production of compounds currently generated from petroleum will depend on efficient microbial catalysts. This written symposium contains papers from leading research groups which together provide an overview of novel strategies to overcome problems regarding the microbial production of industrial chemicals and fuels. In these papers, the authors describe metabolic engineering strategies and fermentation technology alternatives for the production of chemicals like lactic acid, succinic acid, acetic acid, ethanol and polyhydroxyalkanoates in 'Escherichia coli'. Examples are also presented on how metabolic engineering enables improvement of 'Saccharomyces cerevisiae' strains in the production of bulk chemicals for pharmaceutical, food and industrial applications. The material presented in this issue will provide a framework for bringing us closer to a future in which technology will be cleaner and more sustainable.
