This collection of papers presents new experimental approaches in the pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of macular and retinal diseases. Two different techniques are described which aim to restore vision in the macular area. Transplantation into the subretinal space is a possibility that is now starting to have clinical applications. For the first time German government funded projects using a prosthesis in the macula are described, including the preliminary experimental results. The role of gene therapy is also discussed by leading international experts and readers will find new knowledge about the biology of Müller cells and choroidal circulation. This publication will be of immense value not only to all academic retinologists but also to ophthalmologists with a keen interest in future developments in the field.
