The Extramural Grant Program (EGP) is an international research funding source established in 1989. Its objectives are to stimulate and support new research ideas through the funding of science in the field of renal disease and to ultimately improve the quality of life for patients with endstage renal disease. This special issue contains abstracts from the presentations made by the seventy-two grant recipients at the 1996 annual EGP scientific meeting. The abstracts are divided into the following ten sections which correspond to the different areas of research funded by the EGP: - acute renal failure - beta2M-amyloidosis - biocompatibility - cardiovascular - diabetes - nutrition - pathophysiology - transplantation - transport/adequacy - viral hepatitis Presenting a broad spectrum of high-quality research, this publication gives readers an excellent overview of innovative new developments in the field.
