This special issue of ‘Pediatric Neurosurgery’ is dedicated in memory of Fred Epstein, one of the founding fathers of ‘American Pediatric Neurosurgery’ and an unprecedented pioneer in the field. Former trainees, who are now a proud living legacy to his impact on pediatric neurosurgery, were invited to contribute on topics dear to him. Surgery for childhood spinal cord and brainstem tumors, intra operative electrophysiological monitoring, tethered spinal cord, and epilepsy surgery were developed or pushed forward by Dr. Epstein during his notable career and are discussed in this special issue. The contributions reflect current interests within the pediatric neurosurgical community and demonstrate the breadth and depth of the innovative neurosurgical approaches Dr. Epstein eagerly passed on to his students and trainees. Fred Epstein’s commitment to neurosurgical clinical care, research, and education speak to us through his trainees in these pages helping to spur the community towards his ultimate goal: to help and hopefully cure each and every child with a neurosurgical problem. Pediatric neurosurgeons and neurologists, as well as those interested in pediatric neurosurgical sciences, will find up-to-date presentations and reviews of current research in memory of Fred Epstein.
