‘Outcomes research’ has been defined as the scientific study of the outcomes of disease therapies used for a particular disease, condition or illness. What distinguishes outcomes research from traditional clinical research are an assessment of patients’ personal perception of their outcome and additional parameters to measure outcome, such as quality of life, functional status and cost-effectiveness. In this special topic issue, several aspects of outcomes research are described in more detail by noted experts in the field. The articles serve as an introduction and overview that will stimulate further reading and research.
