The clinical management of functional disorders of the upper and lower digestive tract has become a major challenge both at the level of primary care medicine and in specialist settings. Not only can patients often not be given a sufficient explanation of the cause of their symptoms, but complete symptom relief is very difficult to achieve with the currently available therapies. The aim of this issue is to provide an update on current facts and trends including clinical assessment and novel diagnostic technologies. Moreover, the currently available therapy principles as well as prospective ones are presented critically, including the management of dyspepsia and treatment options for functional dyspepsia. Apart from presenting current aspects of functional abnormalities associated with abdominal symptoms, this publication will also stimulate the awareness of the complexity of the visceral sensory network involved in this heterogeneous disease complex. This publication provides a wealth of information for both the practicing gastroenterologist as well as for the scientist concerned with basic mechanisms.
