This special issue contains invited papers from the International Conference on Community Genetics: From DNA to the Community, held in June 2000 in Jonquière (Québec), Canada. The field of community genetics encompasses the integration and transfer to the community of knowledge gained from fundamental or clinical research related to the human genome. Reflecting recent experiences and projects in community genetics worldwide, the papers consider both urban and rural environments, the industrialized world as well as developing countries. Ethical, legal, geographical and social aspects of genetic knowledge transfer are discussed.
