Transitions between the epithelial and mesenchymal cell states are among the most basic of cellular events and underpin major changes in animal development and in cancer progression. This publication is the first of two special issues of Acta Anatomica presenting recent advances in understanding these transitions. It includes a general overview as well as detailed reviews on two archetypal embryonic epithelial-mesenchymal transitions: neural crest morphogenesis and gastrulation in mammals. In addition, cell-cell and cell-matrix adhesion, the cytoskeleton and signalling systems controlling these state changes are discussed in three specialised reviews. These serve as a reference for the reviews of the biological systems. Authoritative and up-to-date, this publication is required reading for all cell and developmental biologists, and will also interest oncologists.
