As Federal Republic of Germany’s first head of state, Theodor Heuss (1884–1963) had a lasting influence upon the office of President of the Republic, during the difficult formation period of the newly founded but still insecure democracy in 1949. He is not only considered one of the founders of democracy in Germany, but also one of the “fathers of the constitution”. His complete letters are now available in 8 volumes (also in a set).
