The Alexandrine Schism (1159�) has generally been interpreted as a conflict between Pope Alexander III and Frederick I Barbarossa. In contrast to past research, this study uses private documents to examine different perceptions of this ecclesiastical crisis and explore the strategies of action pursued by those on lower levels of political power in dealing with demands for absolute obedience.
